I have them on several bikes since those bikes originally came with them. I can't tell the difference.

The few times I rode them, 35 years ago now, I felt like their effect was almost random. Sometimes, at some particular combination of grade, gear, wind, cadence, effort, fitness, weather, phase of the moon, whatever, they pretty obviously made me feel like a better rider. Change anything, even 5 minutes later, and they felt like oatmeal.
Mostly, I couldn't tell one way or the other.
Wouldn't seek 'em out, wouldn't take' em off.
