Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Advice before I buy - I'm clueless

I am a runner (dirty word - sorry) who is about to start cross training and after some research (confusing) and asking friends that ride gravel, I am thinking of purchasing a Surly Crosscheck. It is used but barely, and has upgraded disc brakes on it. I live in a great cycling community and even larger community of gravel riders and from what I have been advised, this bike is a good starter bike and versatile for the conditions (prob excluding mud however). Does anyone have an opinion about this - yes/no/run away from it? If not a yes, opinions and advice would be gratefully received...
Thank you!

TONS of people ride Cross Checks. Muddy conditions is more about the tire than the frame so no worries there. I thought all CCs had cantilever brakes, but anyway.. if it's a good price and a good fit then go for it, they're great bikes.

My buddy rode his crosscheck this weekend on an organized ride with me. It was set up like a Randonneur with racks and all kinds of polished parts. Such a beautiful bike! I love that one of his.

Did you get it? Great bike. If you get it used and decide you want something that "feels" different, you should be able to get your money out of it on resale.

Extremely hard to go wrong with a Cross Check. A tad heavy but it will do practically anything you ask of it. Great choice.

Congrats on the new bike! I'm also a runner (my issue is that I can't stay uninjured) who rides bikes. The Cross Check is a super versatile bike and I imagine you'll be super happy with it. Looking forward to photos!
