Grants for charity groups/community organizations

I do a lot of Bike repairs/rebuilds for two local charities. One is for the homeless and the other is for a safe-house for battered women. I have a shop set up in a donated storage unit where we have built a work bench and storage. I will normally do the rebuilding of bikes there for distribution via the charities. I also do on-the-spot repairs at a church that has a homeless shelter office once a week and at the safe-house every other week.

Almost everything I use comes out of my pocket, tools, parts, cleaning and lubricating supplies. I try and do my parts buying online and in lots to save costs.

I need to upgrade some of my tools, stands etc.

What grant programs are out there specifically for bicycle parts/tools?
I know Park Tool has a program they award once a year but also looking for other manufacturers/suppliers that I may be able to tap or appeal to for assistance.

I am also looking for any pointers on writing the grant requests.

Talk to your local council and they'll help you.

For example:

We have a similar charity "Earn-a-Bike" shop associated with our community farm/jobs skills program here. Local bike shops have been willing to supply us with work stands, consumable parts, lights, locks, etc. at cost. Local churches have also donated to fund such purchases. Local businesses have contributed labor to help remodel a garage into the shop, an air compressor and overhead manifold, electrical wiring, etc. The Scheels Community fund has also contributed funding and tools.

Ask your local bike club.

Ours has several fundraisers for bike charities around town. We just had our annual swap meet/picnic and raised money for a disadvantaged kid's bike program.

The only bike club I am aware of in my town is actually run by a LBS. This particular guy never cuts me a break on part pricing while the other 2 LBS in town definitely work with me.

We have a couple of local forums that I post on regularly looking for junkers to scrap and excess parts just laying around in the garage.

Where's the vids? In addition to the grants, best way to get the word out and gain community and local business support for your cause.

Good answer. They have all types of support coming in from local business, organizations and government all the time.
