Dunlop HP Cycle Tyre Pressure Gauge

One of the unusual parts in a miscellaneous box of parts I recently purchased is a Dunlop Tyre pressure gauge. I assume it's bike-specific as it only appears to fit presta valves and its gauge reads from 50-140psi. It's also only about three inches long. Kinda neat addition to the portable toolkit.

Uber cool addition! I got a Dunlop tire lever from a BF member and had a nice geek moment when I squirreled it away in my Raleigh tool bag. Have you tried it out yet?

@3speedslow just plopped it on a tire tyre and read off about 70psi. It seems unlikely to be terribly accurate, but will still come in handy after fixing a flat.

Just remember the rule” Inflate hard “ and you will be fine!

My Zefal HP is probably nearing the end of its life so "hard" is no longer in its vocabulary. (Unless I can find new valve stem washers/grommets/seals for it.)

Funny coincidence, I came across one of these in my tool box a few days ago. It belonged to my dad. Haven't tried it out, but was thinking I should. Probably dates from the mid-70s

Dug it out of the toolbox and gave it a try. Agrees with the Silca gauge at 100 psi.

I used to always carry one of those in my saddle bag. I haven't seen it in years, wonder if I can find it if I dig around?

I'd be looking for one of those, too, but these days 50 psi is about the top of my inflation range! I reached my limit on purchases I'll never be able to use a long time ago.

You probably can. Zefal sells a rebuild kit for their newer HPx. They're available directly from France, or some times on eBay. There have been a few iterations of the hard plastic pusher, and soft gasket, but they should all fit in the HP/HPx models. I had to carefully trim/sand about 1/4" off the hard plastic piece in an early HPx to use the new gaskets, but it allows presta/Schrader switching by just turning the gasket around, rather than alternate pieces like the early versions.

Edit:. Search eBay for "hpx rebuild". You'll find ~3 sellers of the kit, mixed with some John Deere parts kits. You'll have to compare the stacked height of the new parts to your old set, and trim the slotted pusher the lock arm cams against, to make up the difference in height. It may have been more like 3/8" needed trimming. I think I have an old, un-modified pump kicking around, and can probably dig it out for photo comparisions if need be.
