Anyone remove duct tape used as rim tape?

Anyone remove duct tape used as rim tape?
Bought an older mountain bike and was giving it a good cleaning and found out one of the tires has duct tape instead of rim tape.
The tire actually holds air well but I keep thinking I should replace it but I imagine it will be a huge mess.
Has anyone ever removed duct tape from a rim? Big mess?

If it's a mess, Goo gone will clean it up in a couple minutes.
Do it outside.

Depends how long it has been there. The older, the worse it will be removing it. Goo gone works fine, OMS...really, any petroleum-based spirit.

It won't be a big mess. I'd remove it because, as everyone knows, electrical tape is the better choice and it would bug me knowing that the rim tape was the lower tier of half-asked.

Duct tape glue is tenacious stuff if left on for a long time. It's hard to get off without a lot of elbow grease and turpentine, or Goof Off. Is it worth the time and effort? I would just remove the tape, and put a new rim strap on. Preferably a good one like an old-school Velox. Either that or go back in with some more duct tape. The drawback there is duct tape is funny about not sticking too well to its own old glue.

I removed some recently but it was only on for a short while... very clean release.
Also, not all duct tape is equal. The really cheap stuff will disintegrate quickly, leaving a dried up mess, especially when you try to peal it up. The better stuff will stay intact/moist and last much longer. I won't touch the cheap crap.

Yes. Works fine. Sometimes comes off clean; sometimes it doesn't. Almost any organic solvent gets the residue off.

I've been using 3m Gaffer Tape for years on spoked wheeled Honda dirt bikes and now on my road bicycle. Works very well as it is 'textured' similar to many of the bicycle rim bands. Once you use this tape you will find many, many other uses for it. Back in the day we used to call the silver duct tape '100 mile per hour tape'. This tape is 'Mach-4' tape. And it comes off clean and thin strips are easy torn to fit rims.
Yes it is pricy, but hey, your bike is worth it.....

My experience with at least some old duct tape is not as care-free as others. You can try lighter fluid or mineral spirits, but if these don't work, I'd second the recommendation of "Goo Gone". NOT Goof-Off, which is a different chemical formulation completely.

the adhesive used in gaffers* tape wont leave the adhesive residue,
like common duct tape will ..
in that Velox/Zefal rim tape, is like gaffers tape , but made to be a rim strip.
3M of course also makes a Solvent for adhesives....
[*Gaffer is a guy in the movie production crew taping cables down
so they are less likely to be tripped over,
and up and over scaffolding that may be built..]

I use fiberglass reinforced packing tape. No stretch on double walled rims using high pressure tires.

Same goes for electrical tape. Heat it even a little and the adhesive oozes out and get all over everything. On the plus side, electrical tape adhesive never dries out. On the minus side, electrical tape never dries out.
