Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tights with shorts

OK So it has finally got cold enough here that I am going to have to wear tights. The tights I bought don't have a chamois....So...do I wear my shorts with a chamois on the inside or outside of my tights?

Shorts with chamois, then tights on top.

When it gets cold enough I just throw 15lbs of crisco around my legs and use plastic trash bags to keep it on.

Shorts on the inside and tights on the outside. I always do this when it's below freezing.

I tried this with the cheap store brand of shortening and trash bags, and I can report that it was no fun.

Next time it is Crisco and Hefty for me...

Nothing should ever get between a man and his chamois. Remember that.

OK, it took me a minute to even realize that this may be serious.

it's only just become too cold to ride without tights? where do you live, and what's too cold?

and, to answer your quaestion - wearing the tights under your bibs would be comprable to wearing underwear under your bibs!

I usually use 60 degrees as the cutoff for adding or switching to tights. I wear tights with chamois if I expect the temp to be low throughout the ride and shorts with chamoisless tights when I expect it to warm up.

As was stated earlier - nothing between me and my chamois.

Leg warmers avoid the problem. I find the extra layer of the tights over the shorts tends to be uncomfortable. With leg warmers you're legs are covered, and there's not an extra layer to sit on. and if it's too cold to ride with leg warmers (which hasn't happened yet here in florida)its too cold to ride outdoors.

Here in MT, 30 is the cut-off for the shorts/legwarmer combo. Any colder and you'll need a tub full of hot water, two pr0n mags and an Oreck 8lb vacuum if you ever want to see your naughties again.

I wear my shorts over tights, but I'm in the clear minority. I'm warmer when my bib shorts keep my lower back nicely covered the whole ride. No issues with comfort even on rides up to 3 hours.
