Sweet Wings Cranks --Help with installation + protection!!
Hi All,
I just got a pair of Sweet wings for a vintage build I am planning!
The cranks are in good shape but, as seen in the attached pic, are starting to show some wear. I have a couple of questions for those knowledgeable about these steel cranks.
1. Should I re-plate them (I would prefer nickel over chrome) to protect against rust? Maybe clear or powder coat?
2. If so is there anything I should keep in mind when sending them to a plating center?
3. Anything I should keep in mind when installing the cranks? I've heard about using loctite on the bolts but I'd like some confirmation on that. Other tips?
Thanks!

Sorry, can't help you. I've never seen those cranks before but ... they .... are .... interesting to say the least.

"Sweet Wings", where have I heard about those... oh yeah: https://www.pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-001/FAIL-006.html
I dunno if I'd replate them -- wax might do the job.

I hope you actually read the whole thing, if you did you probably noticed the source of reviews: mtbr.com
My cranks are the road version, and will be on a commuter, so no crazy mashing involved like in mtbiking. Still to date, one of the lightest (520gr including BB), yet funkiest cranks out there
Just curious, why do you have reservations about plating?

I don't have a problem with plating, but some people do, because it adds a couple grams weight to the part.

You might be able to get some answers from the original Sweet Cranks people. They were introducing brakes and cranks a couple years back as EE Cycles. I don't know if their website is current: eecycle Works

I've read that a lot of people just wipe steel cranks with WD40 or apply carnauba wax! I might just go that route for now. Thanks
