Albert died just 4 days ago, RIP. Always a favourite of mine.

He should have won an Academy award for The Dresser, superb in Millers Crossing, turned down a knighthood from the Queen stating that it's that sort of thing that's created too many problems for England. (paraphrased) Amazing thespian to boot, he certainly had the voice.

Thanks for reminding me of the name of this Finney movie. It's from that period when "serious" British movies were almost entirely black and white downers, but I still like it. As for the movie subject of this thread, the principals obviously saw the Umbrellas of Cherbourg and the Young Girls of Rochefort and said I bet I can do that too. More power to them.

"Low seat advisory" for the frequent rear projection simulated riding scenes. May trigger some viewers who are groin injury patients. Also, there should be a surgeon general's warning on the bike racing team meeting scene, where everyone is smoking cigarettes (?!).

Now we know what a bicycle-based economy would look like. These people's entire lives seem to revolve around their bikes. And I can only understand only about half of what they are saying, unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing this one Cranky... I didn't think I had ever watched it, so I tuned into it on a cold wintery evening this week. I'm pretty sure I'd seen at least a portion of this movie before (don't know where). Not much bicycle content, but an interesting watch, none-the-less. It learned me about the movie definition of a "kitchen sink drama", as someone mentioned that term in their comment post of the you tube site. It's a great slice of what it might have been like to work and live within the community surrounding the blue collar, Raleigh building, city of Nottingham, bitd.

Thanks for sharing a link to this movie John.... I thoroughly enjoyed it. It seems strange that such a popular past time as bicycling was in that period of England's history, that more movies weren't created around the sport of bicycling.

A Boy, a Girl, and a Bike (1949) is a simple tale with a fascinating, now nostalgic, view of postwar England. It stars Honor Blackman as Susie Bates, "the girl." She went on to a long career and greater fame as Cathy Gale in TV's The Avengers (1962-4), Greek goddess Hera in Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and perhaps most famously as ***** Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger (1964.)

I did enjoy Boy, Girl, Bike, so thank you for that lead. Sure a lot going on. Romantic triangle, crossing of class lines, teenage boy going bad, bike theft, club camping trip and road race, housing shortage, class prejudice, army deserter on a tandem with baby in the sidecar. David suddenly deciding he's "not the marrying sort" after proposing to HONOR BLACKMAN... that seemed kind of weird, although convenient. Anyway, I appreciated that the riders in the location scenes were the actors and not stunt doubles and was it David? took some realistic falls. Lots of exposition to explain racing strategy. I didn't mind. Corny and minor but well done and cheerful, and they obviously went to some length to make details plausible. I think during these years life in the UK could be bleak; the country was exhausted from the war and broke, rationing wouldn't lift for several more years, sections of the big cities had been bombed to gravel. Enjoyment of the outdoors might have been something the government was trying to encourage to get people to feel better. I also liked that the movie didn't shy away from the upper class snobbery about bicycles, which David is reminded of when he tells his parents about joining the bike club. (And which thanks to his natural enthusiasm he ignores.) And all that location shooting, those small country lanes and beautiful northern landscapes. Are those the Dales? All in all I believe the filmmakers were trying to remind the British there was still much to appreciate in their country and the future might be better than the recent past or present. Not artistically great but a lot to appreciate.
