Watts Towers - LA

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Watts Towers - LA

Id like to make a trip to LA sometime, and thought it would be cool to take some time out and visit the Watts Towers. Im wondering if anyone has visited the towers? Also could you describe the surrounding area? Is it decently safe to drive in and check things out?

I think TheFixer post some pictures of them somewhere in the SoCal forum.

I personally wouldn't do that. I'd rather bike along the strand from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach for scenery. For a challenge, the the PV (Palos Verdes) loop.

fine to drive in. been to visit plenty of times and it is totally worth it. a monument of outsider art that shouldn't be missed if you have the chance. Watts is not the most charming of neighborhoods, though, and I wouldn't really recommend cruising around to dig the scene, or anything. but what do I know?

Take the Blue Line, get off at the 103rd Street station. Easy.

Also, get in touch with this guy and see if he's organizing any rides while you're in town. The TdW (at least the one I went on) starts and ends at the towers, and in the meantime you go down through Willowbrook and then along the Compton Creek, where you will see things that you may not associate with Compton, if all you know of Compton is what you hear in the media and from scratchy old NWA records.
