Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dura Ace vs. Ultegra Di2 newsflash

For all the idiots here tho kept telling me what a sucker I was for buying Dura Ace Di2 last year, here's a newsflash: I got a load of Ultegra Di2 in person for the first time today.

The cheesiness of these components was overwhelming. Good grief.

Happy with D.A. Di2.

Pcad out.

All these idiots are telling me how Ultegra Di2 will be just like D.A. Di2 @ half the price.

Incorrect.

I even played with the shifters, the servo motors look clunky and work clunky compared to D.A. Like I said, I'm sure it works OK, but you are getting a lot of refinement for your $ with the D.A.

It's a long story, but I actually have DA Di2 on one bike and Ultegra Di2 on the other. Functionally they're identical except the Ultegra Di2 front derailleur makes a louder noise from the motor when it shifts. I don't spend much time looking at the actual parts other than the shift levers when I ride, so i can't speak to cheesy. I'd take half off the price for a little cheese.

Either way it must be a slow day in the news flash world I guess

Wow. You sound like you know what you are talking about. What a pleasant change. Come back more often.

Pcad buys the latest bright shiny thing, then spends the next period of time (that's until the next bright shiny thing comes out) justifying said purchase. It's just his way.

Based on what is typically said out here, it sort of fits, don't you think?

Well, sure, but if stuff is so hard to handle that you need the forum to censor it for you, it's a pretty sad state of affairs.

are u drunk or somthing? this is the first time i seen u have bad grammarz! u should take pics of the two (dura ace di2, ultegra di2) and compare, it would be a good lesson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree though, Dura Ace Di2 is like a Porsche 911 and Ultegra Di2 is like a Porsche boxster. imagine if you rolled up on your bike with ultegra di2 and the guy beside u had dura ace di2, it would be so wrong....

If you mean "chessy" as in cheap, yes, it is. Dura Ace has always been 1 up on Ultegra in mechanical function. Bearings versus bushings, alloys and tolerances of higher standards, finish, etc.
You are basically stating the obvious in your assumption. What does come into play is the law of diminishing returns, this is where Ult.
has a one up.

I haven't had the chance to check out Dura Ace Di2, but I did check out Ultegra Di2 several times. I think the Ultegra works very well and it convinced me that electronic shifting actually has merit. I would hope that Dura Ace is nicer and a better made group since it is like twice the price of the Ultegra.

I love it when you guys spend lots of bucks to move up to something new. Then I can buy the stuff that was just replaced for less than half price. Just upgraded the Giant to DA 7800 shifters and front DR, and an Ultegra rear DR. Maybe Shimano will come out with a newer DA soon and I'll move up to 7900.
