anyone grease hubs when touring

Do you grease your hubs on the road while on long tours, or use cartridge style hubs?

I am sure it depends on the length of the tour, but I never have regreased hubs during a tour. My longest tour was a bit over 4200 miles. I imagine if you were going around the world you would need to. How long of a tour are you considering?

Oh and no I don't use cartridge style hubs.

+ 2 with the folks above. I service and adjust my hub bearings before going on a tour, some pretty long and almost all of them with wet conditions. I also go over the bikes pretty thoroughly when we get home, and find that it is mainly an exercise for my peace of mind rather than a necessity. The hubs have always been in good shape, even after 3500+ miles. I don't know if it is any better than other grease, but I use Phil Woods water proof. I think this is also a "peace of mind" thing.

I do check my wheels daily while on tour. Mainly to catch a rubbing brake or fender. However, If there was a hub problem, I think I'd catch it and figure out a way to deal with it. I don't carry the tools that would allow me to service a hub (cone wreches), but I think I'd get it workable with my little 6" adjustable and Leatherman tool.

I have been using the same Wilderness Trail Grease Guard Hubs with injection ports for bearings on each side of the hubs and the headset for 25 years. In muddy and rainy conditions such as on the Divide Ride at times I re-greased often and watched dirt and water ejected by the new grease. I have not had to replace the bearings in all these years and lots of miles. I have the same hubs on my BG RNR and Fat Chance Mtn Tandem. Easy maintenance, long life and smooth running.

Before using the WTB GG hubs I found re-greasing of other hubs necessary on long off pavement trips in S America and Mexico and Canada due to pumice contamination.

I think it was a retrograde step to phase out the old-style hubs complete with grease ports. They were an ideal solution and guaranteed durability (which is probably why they were superseded).

We had our hubs regreased twice in 50,000km -- once we did it ourselves and the other time we let a bike shop do it. The second time, some of the bearings were pitted and had to be replaced.

Did you do this out of necessity, or for peace of mind?
