What is worth buying at a LBS versus buying online?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Maybe he's above such crass consumerism and doesn't need to spend money on a jersey to make his experiences in italy more vivid . I've never returned home from a trip and though "that trip was pretty good but if I had bought that trinket at the shop the trip would've really been something."

But you saved yourself 50 Euros or so. So, that's something.

With the money I saved not buying a jersey and pants I rented a Ferrari for 30 minutes in Maranello and drove the crap out it.

Redlining a Ferrari in 3rd gear in Tuscany > bike clothing.

I bought headset cup removal/install and dropout/derail hanger alignment recently.

Not buying any of the gimcrack consumables from him will insure that he won't be there the next time I have a task that I don't own the tools to do myself.

the correct answer might be just enough to have them know and remember you do when you need a favor, mechanical or equipment wise you are covered.... quickly.

Ditto. And not misguided hope either. Has been so for me with my LBS (Westerville Bike Shop). Depending on what is going on, they have stopped what they were doing to take care of me. Nothing major, but still was keeping me from riding.

When you are purchasing at a local store you are buying service and convenience. You have consider how much that service is worth to you, if anything, not just the cost of the individual items.

Good will is the most important thing you can buy from a LBS. Many shops do sell it.
