First Century - at 59 - done

Completed my first century ride, the AIDS Ride for Life, in Central New York. Good ride though quite hot and windy.

Congratulations. Keep at it. Once you get in century shape, it's easy to do lots more.

Best way to tackle a first long ride -- with a good group. Helps make the miles go by a bit easier when you see others plugging away. I remember my first rides over 50 miles, and first century -- after a certain point it's mostly a mental game. I always preferred the company of our casual cycling club for rides over 50 miles.

Awesome. I'm 53 and starting to think I'm passed the age to do my first century. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe next summer...

If your info to the left is current and you're riding only a MTB, then that will make it a little harder, though not impossible, of course - lots of people ride centuries on MTBs, CX bikes, and hybrids. I've even seen people do centuries on fat bikes and (this one blows me away) unicycles. But I'd venture to say that if the idea of a century seems daunting to you, it would be less so on a road bike.

I don't think it's the bike. I've done 80+ miles in a shot on the same bike, albeit 9-10 years ago. I just don't feel like I have the legs or the back for it anymore, but we'll see...

You'll be surprised. The upright riding position on a mountain bike causes a lot more work. I used to commute using both. The mountain bike had narrow slick tires too. Over period of two years with the one way distance varying between 17 and 22 miles, the road bike was between 2.5 and 3.5 mph quicker.

You may not care about the speed but that translates into more distance covered for the same riding time.

Papa Tom: I was surprised at how many other "older" rides were participating. And how many were riding hybrids, mountain bikes, older bikes, even a tandem! Train but you don't have to kill yourself, do a couple of longer (75+) rides so that you know you can do it, and then enjoy the ride.

I need to knock one of these out before the weather turns too cold. Congratulations; a century is no mean feat at any age.

I am 56 and giving serious thought to a century ride next summer. There is an organized charity century ride about an hour from where I live.
