I've never really had an extensive period away from cycling but I'm certainly out of touch. I worked at a bike shop in the early '80s when there was nothing too fancy or complex about bicycles. When it comes to fancy components or ways of doing things, I think it peaked about 25 years ago. I'm talking about what's practical for the average enthusiast. I've never ridden a full-suspension mountain bike to know what it's like; I'm sure it's great for that crowd but it's not necessary for the Trek or Giant someone might buy for casual riding.

I'm still fixing up vintage and antique Schwinns, Rollfasts, a J.C. Higgins and a Shelby. Sorry about your wife, help her get back together and on wheels again.

I’m back too from a 10 year hiatus. Newest bike was from 1996 until I bought a Cinelli Hobootleg touring bike. The funny thing is, this new bike has absolutely no new technology lol. No disk brakes, no compact or 1x drivetrains, no brifters, etc... It’s actually older tech than my old bikes lol, but I love it!

Haha! *You're* out of a touch? I'm riding a Nishki Semi-pro, circa 1975 with fingertip shifters. It's amazing how the technology has accelerated in bikes the last many years. You're ashamed now to be on a bike if it didn't set you back $1,000 or more.

Ride at night and know one will know if you are riding a bike with a one piece crank, quill stem, and v-brakes.

The word you left out of your post is "fun".
Whatever you think that it takes to have fun is good. Different people have different ideas about having fun. Listening to other people tell you you can't be having fun unless you have X is bad.
