Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

best shoes for the $?

i'm looking to invest in a pair of shoes and cleats to go with SPD pedals. i have a road bike, but have been considering mtn shoes for their convenience - is there any problem with this, besides the slightly less stiff sole? any suggestions on what to get? i'm hoping to stay under $120 or so

I got the specialized comps for 110. I have ridden on them only four times, but I love them so far. I asked this same question and got great reviews on them.

Some MTB shoes are much much flexier than road shoes, and heavier too. Try a bunch of shoes on and buy what fits you best. A good fit is more important than any other feature.

I got Nike Altea IIs for $140. I love them. I spent a little more because they were comfortable and stiff.

I have become partial to the DMT line of shoes. I have the Ultimax RSX carbon soled shoes that are great. These are the Radius model, which are also really nice. Right now, Glory Cycles has them on sale for $99.

Shimano M-180's are in your price range ($139). Comfortable, conservative in appearance, stiff soles, works with two bolt pattern cleats. Very easy to walk in...

Ok people, shoes are more than the name. All of the different brands use a different "last" to design on. Some are wider, others more narrow. Some have high arches and some are fairly flat.

You need to try on ALL of the available shoes and go with what fits the best. For some of us SIDI fits great, others have good luck with specialized. But a person who likes specialized might tell you sidi fits like crap.

No amount of advice will tell you which fits.

My SH-M120 cost $90 canadian on sale ($75 US dollars). They're very walkable, also quite stiff.

Yet to find a LBS that has ALL availble options. I do what I can locally. Shop the internet... buy... return... buy return... buy return... etc...

The guy asked for input. He's getting it...

I like these Adidas, they run $80 - $90 (also available in white or tan I think), not as aggressive as a mountain shoe, very walkable, and fit very well.
