No jock! Where the straps meet the pouch forms a knot of material in exactly the wrong spot. Guaranteed bad friction.
you want tight TIGHT shorts. Bike shorts, or compression shorts, or very tight synthetic underwear.
Just remember, you want your seat back and tray table in the full upright and locked position!

i believe an athletic supporter is a good idea. i have never been able to get comfortable riding without one.
i wear very good high quality cycling shorts with good padding, bike fits perfectly (custom bike), etc.
however i simply have never been able to get comfortable without a supporter. i know they say nothing under cycling shorts but i simply can not stand to ride that way due to discomfort in that area. i have never had a problem with chafing, athletic supporters were originally for male cyclists.

In the case of bike shorts, the pad IS the underwear. With no pad, you might want an extra layer of something. wicking boxer briefs (lycra, actually) seem to work for me in those cases. Since I ride a recumbent, padding isn't necessary -- unless I'm using the pads for their underwear function.

Old thread, and nobody is ever persuaded by this topic, but...
I've ridden for years, on and off since the 1970s, with and without underwear under my bike shorts. I prefer with good supportive undies. Better support for Frank and the Beans, much more comfortable on longer rides. Fewer problems with scrotum pinching or hair pulling. I don't need to constantly rearrange the players on a long ride.
Decades ago we had fewer choices in suitable underwear. Back in the 1970s I had to settle for cotton-poly blend bikini briefs. Good support, but some minor pressure from seams along the groin. Still much more comfy on century rides than going commando with my merino wool and leather chamois shorts.
Nowadays I prefer Champion longline boxer/briefs with compression fit in the legs and a breathable mesh pouch with comfortable support. Those are my everyday underwear, and comfortable under bike shorts too, with or without pads. Or RBX short leg boxers with tighter compression and support more like a jock strap, minus any troublesome seams or pressure points.
I suspect the differences in opinion are due mostly to differences in physiology. I know what's comfy for me, so I do what I like. I know other folks who wear underwear with padded bike shorts, but they don't admit to it because of these silly rules that are one-size-fits-none.
