Gearing question
Is there any advantage to running a larger chainring?
My current gearing is 45X16 (73.9 gi).
48X17 is very similar at 74.16 gi.
Also, a stiffer crank should make a higher gearing (more gi) easier to pedal, right?

Not really any advantage if the gear inches are similar unless you just want a new crankset.
A stiffer crank won't really make it that much easier to pedal. A higher quality bottom bracket might.
What kind of bike / crankset do you have?

Advantage of using larger chainring and sprocket: lasts longer because wear is spread over a larger number of teeth.
Disadvantage of using larger chainring and sprocket: weighs slightly more than smaller components.

Currently running a Kilo TT with Sugino VP130 road cranks. I need to buy another crankset to build up a single speed for my Dad (going to put the Sugino on the SS) so I figure it's time for new crankset. A lot of the ones I've seen have. 46-49t chainring, which made me wonder if I should run something bigger.

Ok. In that case putting on a larger cog would make sense to keep the same gear inches.
