Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Y’all wizards got any magic to combat this or do I need to HTFU and learn how to write with my right hand?
maybe saddle position?

FYI, phrantic09 has been provisionally added to the group/leaderboard with the understanding that if he regularly exceeds my weekly mileage or average speed, he will be promptly booted.

Covid-19 will likely be the catalyst that forced the big change, but the seeds were being sown for years. The "standard" price of a good tri bike doubled or more in a decade. Ironman hoovered up all the attention and people did focused plans for them that wiped out the ability to support local races. The sport became (or appeared to become) too expensive for the relatively-poor next generation, who wandered into running or CrossFit or Spartan races. The 40-somethings absolutely dominate now, and cluck their tongues at the poor moral fiber of the young'uns for not having the discipline for Ironman, nevermind the difficulty of doing it these days without parental backing or the kind of career that's hard to come by in your 20s (and nevermind that you need nearly a week off to do the races now).

Triathlon (via Ironman) priced out newcomers (both in equipment and the death of local races), and the ageing of their core customers is a death knell for the sport's relevancy.

Make no mistake, it's not going to die out completely. It has been contracting, and will continue to contract, and will likely become a sport for rich old white men doing Ironman and local races in certain metro areas.

Logistically, they moved it to somewhere else, just as Austin 70.3 got moved to Waco. The number of Ironman races isn't really going down yet, but the shorter local races are drying up (and reducing even here and in Boulder), and once the feeder series is gone, the big-time is in trouble.

What's the entry price for a triathlon/half triathlon these days?

Assuming you mean Ironman, I think a half is $375 and a full is $750. The kicker is then you have (often) the flight, the bike transport, minimum 5-night hotel stay, and so on. You're lucky to get out of the weekend for only $3k, and that's before the price of everything like the wetsuit and the P5X and the Roka Maverick Pro and Nike 4%s and so on. While you can compete (and do fairly well) on much lesser equipment (as I did for years), the gear-obsessive culture creates the impression that you're in for $10k or more to just do your local sprint. Then you see that you can roll out of bed and drive to a 5k/ 10k/ marathon/ CrossFit gym/ whatever, and you don't even have to pretend to learn how to swim.

Waco is ****. There are much better places in Texas I'd be happy to recommend.

Had a good visit with the parents, now heading home. I am still going to try to get in an easy Z2 ride later despite high heat and humidity. Also gotta get another batch of sourdough ready to be baked tomorrow.

A safe and happy 4th to all who celebrate it.

Ha ha no. It's not even close to "but it's a dry heat", at least not the way CO and AZ are. In CO I could do a race and put my old-school iPhone up the leg of my tri shorts after the race. I did that once in TX and bought myself a new phone.
