1985 Specialized Allez SE - in RED! 48cm
Inspired by RiddleOfSteel's post on his Allez SE find here: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...-very-red.html, I went on to my local buy/sell website and found one of my own on the other side of the size spectrum! Was a bit dusty when I picked it up from the seller, but after some elbow grease and spray wax it cleaned up nice. There is one weird issue though that is bugging me; it only has ONE bottle cage mount. I have another Allez SE from the same era ('85~'86) with two mounts and the '85 Specialized catalog only notates two mounts on the parts list. Is there a reason for this? I have no reason to believe it isn't a real Allez, but wanted to reach out and see what everyone here thinks.
Everything otherwise is pretty nice. Shimano stamped dropouts and BB cable guides, stainless chainstay guard (one of my favorite things about the frame!), Specialized seatstay caps and lost wax crown etc.

Is it your size? You can add bottle cage rivets for a second set. I've had that done several times and it works well.

Yeah it's my size. I don't necessarily want to add another bottle cage, just want to find out when these were made with only one mount. I understand late 70's early 80's bikes often came with only one, but the Specialized Allez's of the time always have two and their '85 catalog states as much.

If anyone has anymore info on the frame that would be awesome. If I go by the Miyata serial number convention, it was built in the first half of '85. Not sure if that explains the single bottle mount. My guess is that it is one of the early production Miyata frames when Specialized was transitioning the Allez from 3Rensho.

I like having just one set of bottle mounts, as on my 1982 Bianchi, so that I can put a full-length pump along the seat tube.

Hm, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Yes on small frames the seat tube usually have the bottle lower, but the frame I posted has no bottle bosses on the seat tube at all. I wish it came that way though!

repositioning the seat tube bottle low, translates the downtube bottle higher, with a classic bottle, no problem, one of the oversized bottles, does not work as well.
especially if the top tube is short enough to be of sensible proportion.
