Can I use 15 mm thru axle wheel with a 12 mm thru axle fork?

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Can I use 15 mm thru axle wheel with a 12 mm thru axle fork?

Can I use 15 mm thru axle wheel with a 12 mm thru axle fork?

Can I use some sort of shim to make it happen or I need to rebuild the wheel and if so, can I use the same spokes or do I need a new one (when rebuilding I would also change the rim itself). What do you think?

What make and model of wheel? That determines what kind of operation you have to do to make it work.

Maybe. I helped my friend convert his bontrager duster wheelset, rear was 12mm, front was 15mm. He bought a conversion bushing online. However I had to turn down the outer dust caps on a lathe. The OD of the dust caps didn't fit into his fork, so I turned them down by maybe 1mm? It was just clearanced to fit.

It is DT Swiss m1900 spline 650b. Not the newest version because this wheel is at least 3 years old.

Should email DT to be sure; as you're wanting to take an MTB wheelset and retrofit to roadie-thru-axle sized endcaps.

Looking back as far as the MY2017 PDF charts they have posted, 12mm endcaps aren't even listed as an option for M1900 Spline wheels.

You have to look at the hub not the wheels themselves. M1900 Spline are DT 370 hubs. This is what you need:

The Stan’s Grail wheels that came on my Niner RDO use a 15mm front TA, bit they also shipped 12mm end caps that fit the hubs.

Talk to the hub manufacturer. I have adapters for my ENVE hubs so I can run the wheels on my 15mm Niner RLT fork and a 12mm Trek Domane fork.

I've bought 2 of these, when I built wheels for my wife and my gravel bikes I wanted to use new XT hubs which are usually reliable. With mine the front hub slipped into spot with no trouble, with my wife's there was a drip that was in the way, turned out to be a touch of epoxy but it scrapped down perfect without scratching the carbon and fit perfect. The tubes are a little trouble to fit in, have to give a real good push and don't easily come out.

I tried that route. But it does not let a 15mm end cap fit on a 12mm fork. I had to buy new end caps, then I had to cut the adapter (like you linked) down to size to fit inside the endcaps.

There is a guy in the road forum who designed some slide in spacers to convert axles from 15mm to 12mm.

Shoot him a private message and see what he has.
