Hi All,

New to the site after being directed via the internet after looking. I have recently aquired a good few Vintage bikes, I have little knowledge of them but looking at gaining some advise and values for what I have if possible, any help is much appreciated in how to go about sorting them to re-sell and general fixing them up. I have around 16 of them, Rayleigh, Carlton, Sun, Cannondale, Dawes and some others. Unfortunatley cannot post links or photos yet, so no clue how to share the photos so they can be seen.

Hello and elcome to forums. The apprasial threads may be a better place for this so tyhe moderators may move this.

Until we can get some pics tell us a bit about the bikes. Do they have model names on them? Something like Grand Pris or Record for the Raleigh? a number maybe on the Cannondale? what kinds of parts on them? Suntour? Shimano?

Posting pics can be tricky until you get used to it, and osting links is limited until you have 10 post as a security measure. Send me a few good pics to get you started and I'll post them. BianchiGirLL@yahoo.com

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Some have names on , some parts are shimano but to be honest I'm unfamiliar with anything else really. A whole new world to me.

I will email you some photos of the bikes. Got about 15 i think total, so I did take photos of some of the parts to them also as someone i know said to do that. About 3 photos per bike. Will send them now. Hope it helps.

Hmmm, I will try my best to see from my photos the models if I can. But yeh post count be good so can share some photos.

The Sun is a gold frame GT10 that has red "gold medal" decal on the top tube frame part. The Carlton is a light blue frame. Cannondale is red with Seaco in white on the top tube frame.
There is a Rayleigh SIS that is light blue to a dark blue/green frame.

A few other Rayleighs. There is a Black Norco. A Peugeot Galibier in yellow with some red and another Peugeot similar but frame red.

That is what I can see on my photos.

Sorry it maybe vague but as mentioned I have very little clue as they are stored at the moment so no access at home to look deeper.

The red frame Peugeot is a Peugeot Equipe.

They all seem to be around the 80s from what I can see via a quick Google search on them.

...the swapped out components and dubious repaint status make it hard to distinguish. Those fork lamp holder braze-ons are characteristic of a certain era.

...so it's difficult to tell much. That seat stay treatment ws used a lot on 531 Reynolds bikes in the mid-range. Often straight walled tubing instead of butted. I certainly has the earmarks of a Carlton production frame from a certain era. But whoever owned and rode these was not especially interested in leaving much in the way of ID clues.

If your question is on value, for most of them not much. OTOH, a couple of them look like excellent restoration project frames at the right price to the right buyer. the right price would be in the hundred dollar range. the restoration of something that has both been badly repainted and has a lot of the original components missing is more a labor of love. This is especially true for something that was not a top of the line bike when it was new.

Yes, once they’ve been crudely repainted, bikes like this would have to be more of a “I want to learn to work on old bikes and have a hobby” thing than an “I can make some quick money” thing.

You're more kind than me. I woulda gone with "I'm currently doing 5-to-10 and need to kill a few hours between the yard and the cell each day" thing.

Thanks the feedback, so I have my work cut out then! I knew a few were not marked and didn't seem worth it value wise. But for some of the others I thought may have some value which are the ones I wanted to focus on.

Any tips on where/which ones maybe to begin with to work on?

Or better to just list them as is for someone as a project for them to do rather than bother myself?

...any work or money you put into them will not be recompensed at time of sale.
If you want to focus on the best ones, this one stands out because not repainted and a 531 sticker on the frame says it is a decent frame.

But it's still pretty rough, needs a lot of work.

+1 on Raleigh w/ original paint.

Easy to strip with a few special bike tools (bottom bracket, headset, freewheel)
Fixed wrenches for all your nuts/bolts/pedals/etc beats adjustable.
Petroleum jelly for surface rust.
Blue Magic* metal polish for shiny bits
Clean (toothbrush for tight spots) & Wax frame and fork

YouTube videos for instructions.

Cleaning corroded spokes is the most tedious, start with that - or, at least, don't leave it to the end.

If you want to clean the bike gently use a large soft sponge with dish washing soap and water. Then, apply plain old automobile car wax like Turtlewax to polish old paint.

Work on the one that needs the least work first to gain experience and have a project that will have a reasonably achievable finish date.

the repainted ones are for enthusiastic effort.
rewarding in achievement, a sink hole as to expenditure.

There is a Carlton group on Facebook and you might join as it has lots of UK members. People advertise stuff for sale and if you sell some stuff there it could save shipping costs.
