Service Sturmey Archer S2 Kick Hub
Hi all
I've owned a Sturmey-Archer two speed kick hub for 8-9 years. Works fine , maybe not as crisp changes as when new. I'm thinking of a basic service, strip re-grease/lubricate re-assemble sort of think.
Anybody got any good links for this specific hub being serviced. I've watched various videos on three speed SA hubs but can't find any for the kick hub. Can't find any useful info on the SA website.
Any help appreciated with links or advice.

Do you have the coaster brake version? The internal design is significantly different between the coaster brake and non brake version.

I have the non brake version.
This morning I dismantled as far as I dare.
Pretty much as if cleaning and repacking the ordinary wheel bearings. Did expose and remove some other cage bearings that were deeper in the hub. Cleaned and lubricated and put back together.
On riding the bike the lower gear is now almost silent on coasting and a louder clicking when coasting in the higher gear (which is normal, I think).
Before my mini overhaul the lower gear was also clicking quite distinctly on coasting.
As a side note I was quite surprised how clean and plentiful the grease appeared to be in the wheel bearings. The non drive side especially looked as if it had been packed 6 months or so ago, not 8-9 years.

Any chance you took pics of the guts of that beastie?
I got one for Christmas and am curious about it's inner workings. Sturmey recommends yearly servicing, so I'm still far out from needing that. I'd love to put an oil port on it when I have it apart, not being able to lube it makes me unhappy.

That would be the hub the OP has. This schematic shows the different design of the coaster brake version. Note that my earlier comment about not having to remove the ball ring does not apply to the non coaster version.
