I had the "nipple pimple" problem with one particular rim/tire width combination and solved it by using a layer of Shwalbe Mylar high pressure rim tape and then putting the Vellox back on over it.

Neither one worked by itself.

I had these put on my Velocity Dyad rims when I had my second set of wheels built.

They are a big, big convenience. No more worry about rim tape moving, bulging, or blow through (Note: I NEVER had a problem with Velox, but it ws not carried by some of the LBS, who carried the plastic strips).

THey do not work with all rims, or even all velocity rims, but they have different sizes.

You got a screaming deal on those wheels. Got any pics to drool over?

If your bike can fit 28's, try that.

Are you using regular tubes or ultralights? Should be around 100g per tube, otherwise too light for durability.

There used to be a product that went in between the rim and tubes to prevent pinch flats on mountain bikes, when people still used tubes on them. I'll edit this post if I find something like that.

That's putting it mildly, esp. for 48-ers. Quick eBay scan, closest thing I could find was a set of 40H on Super Champions, BIN $375. Update - there is a 48H set on Super Champs, $549+ .

Phil Wood hubs.
For 50 bucks.

PHIL WOOD HUBS!!!!!
FOR 50 BUCKS!!!!

Dude... the hubs alone are $650 a pair. That's like a 900 dollar set of wheels.

And, yes, you will get far fewer flats, and be way more comfortable, and probably ride noticeably faster, if you run wider tires.

Also. you should send that guy a bottle of good single malt, cuz he's a righteous dude.

Post some pics of those, including the inside without the rim tape. One thing I've seen happen on my wheels a few times is that even though the rim tape is covering the holes, it will slide when mounting the tire. It's happened a few times to me and is usually a sign to get new tape. I had that problem with a bike I just resurrected from the basement a month or two ago.

What is limiting you on tire size for the Trek 1? The frame or brake calipers? The Rigida 1320 was a wide enough rim to hold more than a 27 x 1 safely. It was a crappy rim though. IMO. They don't stay true.

Are the spoke ends poking out of the nipples?
