Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedals: 105 vs Ultegra or...?

Hi,

Is there a big difference between pedals: 105 and ultegra?

Then, any suggestion on other model/brand?

Thank you.

According to the specs the difference is marginal.

I'm using 105/5600's on my Ultegra 6600 equipped Prestige and Ultegra 6700's on my Team bike and to me they feel and ride the same. They are very close in wieght with the 6700's being 16g lighter..

Save a few $$ and go with the 105's, just my 2 cents.

+1

I have 105 pedals on three different bikes and all the groups are ultegra and dura ace. That just goes to show what minimal differences there is between the 105 vs ultegra pedals.

You could look at buying a good used set of Ultegras for the price of new 105s.

Don't go with anything outside of Shimano pedals though. Everyone else is just making something that only can compare to Shimano's. I have 105's and they do me great. I had their R540's on my first roadie, and those pedals lasted me 5 years before I noticed the bearings didn't roll as fast or well as before. Imagine what a step above that will do.

I really like my 105 pedals. However, I have not used Ultegra. I would assume they are as good or better - but how much is the question. I noticed a slight difference from 540's to 105's. If I could have found Ultegra pedals for a good price I would have went that way.

My next pedals will probably be speedplays. I went the shimano route strictly because the cleats were easier to walk in. However, I have noticed that I take fewer than 10 steps on a typical 30+ mile ride - and that is usually in my driveway, or right by my car on group rides. But honestly, I have zero complaints about the shimano style pedals - so I may not switch at all.

I'm really fond of the Shimano pedals. I ride the Dura Ace carbons. Love the wide platform over the very popular Speedplays

I'm a speedplay convert. I had Ultegra pedals and love the Speedplay Zeros more. You can dial in just the exact amount of float you want, and they are easier to clip into when you're on a hill. They do require a bit more maintenance, but I think it's worth it.

They aren't really smaller platform, the platform is on the shoes not on the pedals.

IIRC, 105 and Ultegra pedal internals even share the same Shimano part numbers. The only difference is color and a gram or two. Literally.

Ironically, I'm trying to sell a set of almost-new Ultegras right now, complete with a set of the yellow cleats in the original packaging, for LESS than the cost of a new set of 105s, but so far no takers.

Well, I am in the market for some Ultegras, how much do you want or can you give a link to a for sale post?

I have some Ultegras on one bike, and 105's on another. If you don't have both, 105's are really just fine. But the Ultegras are just a bit lighter and seemingly easier to 'roll'. A bit nicer finish as well.

I'm using the even lower-end R-something pedals (SPD-SL) and I can't tell the difference between those and my ultegras on my other bike. Got 'em for $49, I think - I'm never buying ultegra pedals again.

I have had Dura Ace and 105 pedals.....I can't tell the difference when riding. I do know that the 105's held up better for me and needed to be rebuilt less often.

The Speedplay pedal/cleat system has a larger contact surface area than the Shimano pedals. I think you're just looking at the size of the pedal instead of the contact area of the pedal plus engaged cleat.

i only got a 6700 b/c ribble didn't have the 5700 pedals in stock and i found a set of used 6700 with two sets of cleats for $70.

You don't buy Shimano pedals for weight: you buy them knowing that you won't have to worry about it for the next 5-7 years. Someone once said that they are like the AK-47 of pedals.

Thanks for the link. I see the speedplay in a different way now. Makes sense.

I'm using Dura Ace and Ultegras on my Tomasso and Pedal Force respectively. The DA's spin nicer, look nicer (barely) and cost more. Despite the fact that they look nearly identical, they are different looking. SOoooooooooooooo smooth.

At least until the plastic wear plate on the R-540s wears out, anyway.

I have 1993 Ultegra Look compatible pedals. Still going. But this is probably the last year. Not because they must go (still roll without issue) but because I would like something with lower profile, like the spd pedals.

I have both and I think the 105's are best for the price.
