1974 NY Bike Show

Someone posted these recently to a regional forum I used to frequent. Figured you folks would also enjoy them.

bikingbill:

In the early 1970's, while in High School, I had a business importing bike frames from the UK and equipping them with Suntour/Sugino/Shimano components for sale. Used my dad's reseller license and actually got into trade shows.

In 1974 I attended one with a pretty nice camera and took a bunch of slides. Just had all my slides converted to digital.

So here's a bit of a blast from the past for you ....

Good stuff!

Check out those mutton-chop sideburns, long hair and leisure suits! Yeah, style was king back in the 70's, wasn't it? Who was the girl? And where was the show?

This may not be the 1974 show. I recognize Gian Simonetti. Not sure why he would be wearing a Rexart shirt while he would be working for Masi at the time. Rexart was a Masi dealer, small chance Rexart ran the booth there as they were based in New Jersey.
Later Rexart bankrolled Medici.

I was at the '75 show, NYC at the Jacob Javits Center if I'm not mistaken. Yes indeed, things have changed a lot.

Loved the pic of a very young John Howard.

I vaguely remember '74. I had no idea there was a place called New York at the time, though.

This is so awesome, my all time fave classic era. I see an exxon graftek with a steel or AL fork, so probably after 1974?

Wonder where all these machines are today.

Wow, good info T-Mar! Thanks.

Shame she went out in an accident like that...

Doesn't that particular Fuji Professional belong to one of our forum members, or am I thinking of a different collection of pre-production Fujis?

IIRC, most trade shows were held at the New York Colosseum at Central Park West and 59th St. I don't think the Jacob Javits Convention Center was completed yet in 75.

Knowing the history of Matt Beecher's (Beech33) Pro there's a very good chance the one shown at the show is his. IIRC his has a '75 serial number but the Pro didn't show up for sale until the '76 catalog.

https://velospace.org/files/ridea.jpg

I have the Pro that was shown at the '79 show, pretty much the same except the fork crown and livery are a bit different.

Wikipedia agrees.

Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is a large convention center located on Eleventh Avenue.... The revolutionary space frame structure was begun in 1980 and finished in 1986....

When the Center opened, it replaced the New York Coliseum as the city's major convention facility....

There are other clues to suggest this isn't the 1974 show. Most notably, the Reynolds booth is displaying 753 which didn't become commercially available until the 1976 model year. I believe these pictures are actually from the 17th Annual International Cycle Trade Show, held mid-February 1976, at the New York Coloseum.

I pulled this link off the forum a few years back and saved it, more NY bike show photos from back then.

I think it is from the show held in February 1975.
