Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade Opinion Needed!

Hi everybody,

Just finished my first race season with my 07ish allez, and I'm wondering if I should sell this one and upgrade. I'm not even sure if I should upgrade the entire bike (if I should just get new wheels, etc.) Here's the details:

Current Allez:
07 Aluminum frame
SRAM red brakes
zipp carbon handlebar
'08 105 triple shifters, RD, FD, cassette, chain
FSA vero triple crank
105 pedals
Mavic cxp22s wheels

I love the bike, except for the fact that it's a triple, the BB/Crank sucks, and the wheels could use an upgrade. I'd love to put in BB and double crank in, but I'm not sure if I'd need new shifters, derailleurs, etc. If I don't it's not that expensive of a change, if I do, it's not even worth it I feel like. And i'd love to upgrade the wheels if I keep this thing. The whole reason why I'm even considering upgrading is because I feel like it may just be too much $/PITA to upgrade, and I do want something that's not jerry-rigged. I want something that I'll love to ride and that I'll keep for a long time.

Other options! (keep in mind I can probably sell the allez I currently have for a substantial portion of these costs)

CAAD10 Rival + Wheels (just something like ultegra) = ~$2250
Giant TCR Advanced 2 (Ultegra), no wheel upgrade = $2300
Giant Composite 2 (105, some tiagra) + wheels = ~$1900

I'm also thinking about the upgrade because the Giant's are pretty discounted where I live. Also, since I want this to last for a long time, is it a bad idea to go carbon?

Let me know what you think!

Get a carbon Giant, keep the allez, forget about wheels. You can buy them later. Use the allez for a wet weather/trainer bike.

season finished because of my test schedule/travel plans/etc (i'm a college student)

The whole point is I'm trying to spend the least amount possible, unless it's really worth it... So don't really want to get a new bike, would if i could though!

any other opinions? I'm riding the caad today, as well as a specialized tarmac just to see what a carbon bike feels like. I'd love to hear any opinions!
