Quite possibly, if not probably, most folks. When I was wrenching, we had so many Weinmann and Dia Compe pads around, I must have figured it out. There were multiple cards of pads, boxes of pads, lots of pads. Perhaps I was properly trained about the issue. Can't remember.

I don't actually know how long the Kool Stop Weinmann inserts have been available. I was away from cycling for a few years. They've been available for at least 5 or 6 years.

MAFAC calipers flex, but they still somehow work great. As you no doubt know, if they're brazed on it significantly improves the stiffness. The old Spence Wolfe power booster plates worked too. I've been a MAFAC head for decades. It took me longer to warm up to Weinmann.

I kind of half vaguely recalled maybe seeing a couple Varsity's with CP brakes. Couldn't find them in a quick search though. I mostly remember them on the Continentals. But thanks for the Schwinn trivia! Now I know. That's the kind of thing we care about on this forum.

Found a pair of pre CPSC calipers on the 'Bay this morning. Already have a set of Campy SR levers on the bars, so the brake situation is settled. Now for rims; clincher or tubies.......................

If yours is like mine, it originally came with 27 inch wheels, which makes 700c rims a far reach. The only thing that I could find to work were Weinmann centerpulls.

What is the measurement from center bolt to rim?

53mm in front, 56 in the back. I may have to use a drop bolt in back and maybe a touch of filing the slots on front caliper, but I'll mock it up before deciding. This bike would've come with 700c tubulars stock.

There are drop bolts available to fix that problem.

nesteel already indicated he has a '73 P13, which means the frame should be made for Campagnolo sidepulls and 700C's in the first place.

Incidentally, the '72 P13 in my photo (foreground) is wearing 700C's.
