1938 Raleigh Sports with Blue Collar Provenance

So, as a Raleigh guy, I picked this thing up on Ebay a decade or more ago... There was zero mention of the newspaper article haphazardly tossed into the bottom of the box. Not really value adding, but endearing to me. THIS is why I really like old bikes. History, regardless of true signficance...

The 38 catalogue at the VCC shows this bike as a stock Speed Sports model 33, except the bars were black. Maybe it's a Sports done up with the club bits but still the same bike. Same Terry saddle too. Does the bike have EA1 wheels?

Sweet bike, sweeter story.

As I recall, it did, but I would have to confirm.

There were several different handlebar shapes along those lines in the 1930’s, with various different names. This particular bend may be unique to Raleigh. Today we tend to refer to this whole family of handlebar shapes as "Lauterwasser bars" for Jack Lauterwasser, who designed one such bar. Soma Fabrications now makes a handlebar with a somewhat reminiscent bend that they market under the name "Lauterwasser bar" and it is probably the closest thing you can find at the moment.

It is often confused with a moustache bar, but that's a different animal. FWIW a Lauterwasser bar is 7/8” (22.2 mm) diameter, while a moustache bar is 15/16” (23.8 or 24 mm) which means the former fits brake levers made for "upright" bars, while the latter first brake levers made for "drop" bars.

Every day is a slow news day in the local paper.

Even I managed to get a mention in the Basingstoke Gazette 10 years ago, when I won a full-size Dalek in a magazine competition. I think the magazine company had 'seeded' it with the paper, but they obviously didn't have much else on so they published it.
