Note sure what you're looking for here, but here's a few:
1) You want to see how far you can go
2) You're competitive
3) You want to see what you're capable of
4) You want to know what it's like to race against our nation's top riders

Uhm, at some point you'd essentially just be time trialling and not "racing" anything.
Even then I'd assume if you intentionally achieved a Cat 1 fitness level but never hardly raced, but always TT'd from the field......you'd bob in and out of 4/5 and 3? I guess.
What's the fun in TT'ing a 4/5 field win?
Might as well race on the local MUP or greenway for KOMs at that point.

It's all about the Benjamins, boy.
(I'm a terminal 3, so I'm all about the Abes. Maybe an Alex on a good day.)

When I was a four, I once earned a pack of fresh, handmade tortillas for winning a race. So that's another good reason to not upgrade.

flour. Corn can be good in certain applications but I generally prefer the flour and I have no gluten issues

Bragging rights.
However that only goes so far. At work you'll say "yeah I won a race yesterday", then your coworker will talk about how they did a "race" with rest stops, and also ask why you aren't riding in the Tour of California.
Oh, and the scars! Can't forget the scars. Everyone loves 'em.

As a cat 4 that has been dropped more times than finished this past season..I would love to be able to TT off the front and win that way

I don't talk about racing with people that don't race. Causes more confusion on their end and more angst on mine than is worth it.

It really is bragging rights; although very few people care about it. I'd say the SCNCA community is probably less than 10k racers. Those are people who actually put some interest in their competition and the other categories (many of the racers could care less). If we whittle it down to masters, that's probably even less. Cat 1 seems to be the number when non racers start to suck up to you. We have a few guys in our group rides that are meh towards everyone but light up like a Christmas tree when the DPros and 1's show up. I've always hated those guys; it probably comes from getting that treatment growing up in foster care.
I think for those of us stuck lower than that its about the competition.

It isn't about bragging rights at all. As if I would ride thousands of hours for bragging rights for...what? No way.
It's about competiton, about being as good as you can be and seeing how that stacks up to everyone else. Bragging is for the insecure. Cat 1s are guys not good enough to be a pro (currently for some, ever for most). What the hell is there to brag about?

I like to start each one of my posts with an implied argumentum ab auctoritate. Despite its fallacious nature, it cuts down on a lot of irrelevant questioning and debate in online discussion forums, notably the bf.
By all means, don't listen to a thing I say. But know that when I'm commenting on cat 1s, I'm actually commenting from experience and not on things I perceive or make up.
I have no idea whether or not you can say the same.
See? It's quite functional.
