Bikeology Girl

This is just more of a discussion question, but does anyone remember the photo of girl in the seatpost section of the old Bikeology catalog? She was squatting wearing only a two-piece bikini with a seatpost between her hands, and the caption below her read "Remember to grease before insertion". I was only about 16 at the time, but with the all Campy equipment and her, it was my favorite magazine back then. Even now I can still picture her. I guess I must have probelms.

Alan Goldsmith was not original though, locate the old Playboy with the article on Eddy Merckx. I think it was soon after the hour record.

I was working for "Big Al" when he first steered Bikecology (now supergo.com) into the mail order business. Let's just say there were a few other memorable pictures in the first couple of catalogues. Of course, many readers claimed that they "just read the articles," which I wrote on topics such as rotating mass and wheel design.

That's cool. You must be the the one who taught me that an ounce off the wheel is worth two off the frame. Because of that advice, I saved up enough money and got my brother to build me a set of wheels with Super Champion Arc-en Ciel rims and Clement Seta Extras for my Masi. Every cent I had then went into my bike. Much better than drugs and alcohol.

I also remember that catalog and the seatpost girl. Sadly, a scan of that catalog doesn't seem to exist on the internet.... I know, I've searched ! I'm not a dirty old man, but instead a person that wants to confirm a very distant memory. It would be nice to see that page again just for the politically incorrect giggle. Thanks for confirming that memory.

My Ron Cooper was mail-ordered from Bikecology. If anybody's got the catalog, I'd love to see it just for those frames, if they happen to be in there.

The first "catalog" I received was 3-4 typewritten pages in a business-size envelope. Possibly mimeographed....

This is not my content.

I found it while researching the period correct build out for a 23" ~1976 Ron Cooper Racing model.

There does not appear to be NSFW content? I don't know.

Are photos of your Ron Cooper Touring model up anywhere?

Thanks for the link to those! My Ron Cooper is around on bikeforums. Here are two photos. Got a lot of braze-ons put on it for racks and fenders because the original iteration wasn't great to tour on. It's not period-correct, but it needed other work so it was far from untouched, and it's a great camping bike.

Not as yet; still sort of searching, between serious spells of intense indolence.

By this thread, Drillium Dude and zbillster have Bikecology catalogs.

Here is zbillster's scan of the 1980 Bikecology catalog.

Thanks for posting the link. Love seeing those up-charge prices!!! Interesting to see what they didn't even offer. Clement Seta Extra 250 g @ $20? Wicked good buy. No Campy Record hubs? Bah. Campy Record brakes $45 eh, we wanted them badly, thar's for sure. Be kinda fun to run the whole list, but work beckons! Sugino cranks/black rings, Staying, Campy not even offered, np. But the hubs? They should be an option...w/ Arc-en-Ciel rear and Medaille d'Or front, 15/17/15 spokes. I got my Ron Cooper a year+ earlier from the West Hill Shop in VT. but I remember checking Bikeology's component offerings/up-grades avidly! Only $8 between R and SR headset... Oh my poor weight-weenie brain. I got my first SR bits in 2014.
Cheers,Eric

Additional thanks for resurrecting this thread. I worked in Santa Monica CA, from 1985 - 1992 and spent many lunch hours in the store(s) on Wilshire Blvd, then Colorado (AIR), and moved south to the "OC" around the same time I relocated. Got to "know" Alan and some of the guys in the shop. Alan always said his wife/ex-wife Susie (?) was the inspiration for the shop, and penned a tribute to her in the last catalog that I remember when she passed away from cancer (AIR). Maybe she was a "model" in the early days. As an aside, there was another shop in west LA that Roger and Bill, who constructed the first FS MTB I ever saw, the Bushido, owned.
