Wearing tyres in?

Got my hybrid bike last week and on the back tyre the tread has worn away slightly in the middle all the way round, is this normal?

Completely. There is more weight on the rear, it will show wear prior to the front. Some replace the front when the rear is worn out, placing the old front on the rear, as having a better steering tire is preferred.

Is this a new bike that shows tire wear in one week? That would not be normal.

Well, that depends on how much have you been riding, how much you weigh, and what kind of tires they are.

You may be relying too much on your rear brake. On pavement, the front brake is more effective at slowing you down. Now, grabbing a handful of front brake on a road with gravel or sand on it isn't such a great idea. Learn to use both in conjunction with each other, but rely less on the rear brake. Also--how high are you running the tire pressure. Try running them 5-10 lbs. less than the max stated on the side of the tire. The max is just that-the max you'd want to run them, and you most likely don't need the max. You'll get a feel for the brakes and what tire pressure works bests for you as you become more familiar with the bike.

I am heavy and weigh 95kg

The tread is fully still there on the outsides just not the very middle of the tyre

Here is the tyre

using the rear brake will have a negligible effect on rear tyre wear unless you are locking up the back wheel post a pic of your front tyre a lot of tyres have very little tread pattern on the top of the tyre to begin with. As mentioned the rear bears the brunt of your weight + is also the driven wheel so wears a lot faster.

In the middle of the tire there is a mold release line that is not intended to function as tread and usually wears of extremely fast. That tire is designed to essentially to be slick, and the slight siping on the sides probably does nothing at all either. Don't worry about it. When worn the tire will appear squared off in the center.

The tires don't have tread in the middle.

Sorry, somebody else posted while I was typing.

+1 Use the mold release line as reference.

Thats not worn. You can still see the seam in the middle of the tire. Yes that will go away fairly quickly, but you have a couple of hundred miles before the seam is even worn. What to look for on rear tires is if its "squared off". The tire is no longer a semicircle, but completely flat in the middle.

Oops, I guess I should read previous posts before I respond.
