Immensely pleasant ride this evening, about 2 hr in total. Rode into work on the MTB directly. then left work and rode through Tecolote Canyon down to the coast to the start of the Fiesta Island world champs ride. Chatted it up with some buddies for a bit and then rode the first lap with them, winding out my gear on the 1x to get them up to speed right near the causeway before I dipped.

Rode on the road over to the Presidio and did some exporing in the canyon behind the Ft. Found a really pleasant huge grass hill that's difficult to access because the main path from the road at the top was blocked off and I had to hike-a-bike some decrepit trail to get there from below. Then I rode another 30 min on the road to get back home.

Don't think I'll feel quite as easygoing about my TT up GMR tomorrow morning, but I'm feeling pretty lax about it. There is no way in hell I'm winning that TT but I want to go for a PB at least.

Raining here so I did a Zwift race. My watts are always bigger on Zwift than outside, at least right now. Mainly because I haven't been climbing. Once Oak Glen and Onyx warm up that should change.

Finally broke 300; 301 for 20m (4.25 w/kg). Probably could have pulled 315 but it was a 'race' so I was sitting in a bit. Being away from the scene for 2 years my pack riding skills are atrocious so I'm trying to get in as many hammerfests as I can. Slowly its getting better but I still have this insistence on tailgunning.

Oh yeah, every all time power number past two minutes has been set this month. Feelsgoodman.

This year junior is more powerful than ever for short (<1 hr) events. This was done on 1-2 hours/week in snow (cx or MTB) riding, 1-2 hours/week on rollers, and 3 hours per week in gym. Winter 2018 has been the biggest power gain year since 2014, maybe ever. That does not equate directly to winning, but it helps.

It has me re-thinking the on-the-bike to "other" ratios for training.

60min of z2 today. think I'm actually signing up for a crit next weekend, would only be my 2nd crit ever and first road race since 2015. suddenly feeling inadequate, but my fitness is good, even if my vo2 and anaerobic stuff still stinks, so I'm hoping I can just work on not doing any real work lol

Another real easy ride this morning on the tt bike. Really digging the full recovery week. Not looking good for the race tomorrow, but we'll see.

If your point is because of his age, sure, there is a kick that comes around 15-16 and one that is/was expected about 18-21. So it may be just that. But relative to those his age there was a significant jump. I know well kids hit these levels at different times. But I also think the more rested, lower mileage, heavier rider is stronger. He has not done any long events to really have any data on how that will go. He was never much good in the 90mile plus races. I expect endurance is down and hill climbing will not be where it was. But I don't know. For these 20K TTs and crits, I think it is more from reducing miles than age.

You were promoting that a lot in another thread as well, but are you basing all off this just off of seeing what your son has done?

I don't get this carte blanche promotion of weight training over riding based off an experience of one, especially one as talented as your son. He could very likely do nothing except hop off the couch and drop most (if not all of us) posting on this website.

That really doesn't say anything about the effectiveness of any particular training methodology for any particular person other than him.

That's great it's worked for him. I had the opposite effect in the weight room in college for myself. On half of the hours I used to do, I've well eclipsed all of my cat 1 collegiate prs from a sprint (200+ watts) to 20 mins (40 watt improvement) to three hours, and I've won a lot more races, too, all by focusing more specifically on different aspects of riding.

There's simply not a single-dose panacea, here.

No. I point to some pros as they are public, but for the stuff they do, weights are less important, or effective. Latest find was Cancelara report-ably dead-lifted 200kg while being 80kg. Don't know, but old-school weight lifting is still alive.

Why would I be motivated to say my kid is less talented than most think and it is primarily training? Fact is, it is everything, but I'm sharing what I have become convinced of - high resistance (and other stuff) combined with on-the-bike is better than on-the-bike only (for the same training time).

I started on a HS schoolmate basketball player in the 70s got him to be quite the hopper, me (no talent, or pain desire) and several cyclists in the 80s, a few Olympians (I was minimally involved), just little stuff and equipment setup, my wife in the 90s and Olympian friend, I raced a bit - and was in the culture. Then my daughter for soccer, and got to know some big timers and ask/talk. Cycling again, then my son. We live in SoCal, I like to talk. I ask questions. A mom of a 14 year old kid (Cat 5) approached me (I get asked a lot) for advice. You can see him training with my kid in videos I posted, the tall blond guy. I told her, she hired the same coach, kid also won the VOS TT, the year after mine and is now a Euro pro. Trainer trained a gold medalist cycling Olympian - before PMs but whatever. This is not new, I just applied it on my kid. I have videos of how it was done. It is training. And training in a way it is fun and mixed. It works. I knew this before I even got my son in it.

My daughter had about the highest explosive (she jumps high) of any of the soccer girls (more than there are cyclists) and got picked up by the then NCAA national champs. We had her on resistance training age 12 or so, and the bear machine (look it up). I have more soccer videos still than cycling, so I'm sparing you.

Sure you have to learn the art of any sport, but it helps knowing you have the engine.

Fun with numbers

5.11 for thirty this morning

Looked at recent best five minute efforts and realized they’re better (w/kg) than my historical best 405. Guess I should actually race at some point.

50-ish race simulation miles with a bunch of teammates. Attacking the crap out of each other. Good times.

Yeah you should race, I'm not sure what all that fudgery of numbers is just that you're light than me by a few pounds so that w/kg is big..

Right there with you; my PM wasn't registering left leg power and adding the wind and cold I just didn't feel it. Nothing kills motivation like knowing your power data isn't going to be right.

2hrs, a series of 15min sets with 3x5min, 20sec @150% then @ 95%, with the final 30sec of each set ramping up to 140%, so-called "race winners" which, in my case, will be more like get dropped and catching up lol

Got out late to do a long ride. Flatted near the start, then stopped for a guy that needed a pump, then stopped for food stuff and spare tubes at the shop. After a couple hours high tempo/sweet spot, I decided to extend the ride by 44 miles and a couple thousand feet to go through point reyes national park out to the lighthouse. So needless to say I dialled in back. Rode at z2 for another several hours and got home just after it got dark.

125 miles, 4800 kj and 400 TSS.
Fun times.

Gonna head out for a long one after my botched SDSR.

We showed up late for the TT so I did without warmup and felt like crap, then promptly flatted on the first lap of the RR yesterday. I headed home last night as I can't start the crit today, and I'll hit up a nice long ride in a little bit. That should make me feel better.

Very easy recovery ride with plans to ski this afternoon, but the snow didn't come in last night like it was planned, so I might pass on hitting the mountain to work on some personal projects and do adult stuff.

Did a recovery ride on Friday and felt a pretty substantial pop when I stood up over the crest of a little kicker, and suddenly had like way more flexibility. I am honestly not sure if this means I completely tore the muscle that is strained, or if it has fixed itself. It has felt like the same one from August and it's a minor stabilizing muscle in the hip that attaches to the groin, so uh, maybe it's toast? It probably isn't, I'm just so used to being injured I think I'm up in my own head about it. I took a stab at 3x12 yesterday but I couldn't shake the paranoia and ended it at the beginning of the second interval. I have a physical therapy appointment on Tuesday so I'm laying low today, will do a chill spin tomorrow, and if PT says I'm fine will likely aim for 3-4x15 afterwards.

didnt get going until 10pm, was supposed to do 4x20 sweet spot, but kept it to 3x20 (around 90% each) so I could settle down and get to bed at a slightly more reasonable hour. ctl is around 82, all time high!
