Nexus hub — replacing only the internal part

Hello!
I have a question about replacing a nexus 8 speed hub. Rather than rebuilding the wheel, or building a new wheel with a new hub, could you just buy a new hub and replace the old internal spindle with the new one and place it in the old shell (that is built into the wheel)? Wouldn’t this basically be the same a replacing the entire thing? Let me know what you all think. I haven’t found any threads of anyone doing this, maybe for good reason?

As far as i know you can even buy the internal part alone. At least for sturmey archer hubs.

The 'internal' part(s) can be ordered from Shimano. Which hub do you have?

I'm not sure if this model is still being made, but I wonder if the "internals" of a newer model would fit?

Part #'s for the internal assembly are:
Y-34R 98151 Axle length 184mm
Y-34R 98161 Axle length 203mm
That's for the entire thing, with the axle. You can get the internal parts separately too. You'll also need the oil to dunk the assembly in before putting it in the hub shell.

Don't have my password saved on my laptop for the B2B site so I can't tell you whether they're in stock or not, you can have your local shop check on that.

You didn't say why you want to replace the guts of the hub. Is it possible that the hub merely needs service? The Nexus 8 is a pretty robust hub. You could contact Rat City Bikes to see about repair or replacement of the internals of your hub.
