Why is this thread still here? Five thousand other threads get locked and deleted, but this one hasn't gone away yet?

And, FWIW, the LA Times article about the 19 year old surfer killed by the shark reported his last words were, "Help me, dude."
I **** you not.
RIP, dude.

I have seem sharks while out surfing. A hammerhead, a sand tiger, and a few I couldn't identify. They never seemed interested in me.

Tiger sharks are plentiful in Hawaii. I've been in the water with a few while spearfishing--small ones though, the biggest only about 7'.

True story: I was surfing with three other guys at San Onofre on a really big day. It was a Great Day, and this Marine Cobra (attack helicopter from Camp Pendleton) was buzzing us, we just figured he was jealous because he had to work on a big wave day.
He kept buzzing us repeatedly, and we were good-naturedly flipping him off and thought he was just being a smart@$$.
Then the lifeguard's jeep pulled up with the roof lights flashing. We were bummed; we thought the nuclear power plant was having some dumb safety drill or something, so we sluggishly started looking for one last wave to ride in.
THEN the lifeguard came swimming out to us. So we started paddling a little faster and were no longer looking for a wave. When we finally met the lifeguard he said, "Did you idiots NOT see the helicopter trying to warn you?"
Turns out there was a 24+ foot great white scoping us out. It made the OC Register, and I heard there was a picture too.
And then there was the time I had a close call with the tiger shark at La Jolla swim cove. No matter what time of day it is, or how lousy the weather, there is always at least a half-dozen swimmers on their way out to, or on their way back from the 1/2-mile buoys. But on the day the full-grown (12+ foot) tiger shark buzzed by me twice, after the first time, I looked up to see who else was on the menu--there wasn't a SOUL in the water with me, and I was at least a quarter mile out. The people standing on the cliff above the cove looked so smug and safe and far away. They seemed to be looking out at the only poor b@$t@rd who wasn't aware that there was a large shark in the water.
I held my breath and kept staring into the green void, waiting for the shark to show up again. I'd heard that their noses have a lot of sensitive nerve endings, so one's best chance at survival is to sock the mf'er right there.
The two minutes I was out there seemed like a lifetime. I kept spinning, staring into the green void, spinning, and waiting... in my periphery, I'd occasionally catch a glimpse of my bare fist or foot and think to myself, "THIS ISN'T A WEAPON! THIS IS A ^$%#@ DRUMSTICK!!"
I eventually made it back to shore without seeing that big tiger (or another swimmer) again. I've seen smaller sharks dozens of times while swimming at La Jolla. Probably the most scared I've ever been in my life.

I got hit by the tail of one of these mating sharks a few seconds after I took this shot. Does that make me a non-weenie?
We have a resident bullshark near one of our reefs that occasionally makes a spectacular - and always aggressive - appearance. The first time I saw it, I was with a couple of open water students and we were expecting more reef sharks. I nearly crapped my pants when this shark came to within 10' of us with its fins down, and then turned, revealing itself to be a big mo-fo bull.
Waiting 5 min on the surface for the boat to pick us up after the dive was exceedingly un-nerving.
@Chris - that story creeped me out! I dont mind sharks when I am in the water - have had close encounters with bulls and even an oceanic white tip, and we've even been there amidst them during an impromptu chum session - but being on the surface with a big tiger is the stuff of nightmares. Curious, fearless and big is a bad combo in a shark.

This guy was killed body-boarding at Vandenberg AFB
https://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,2849605.story
Today, they were lookng for the severed leg. I n my day, (growing up Central Coast Cali) they would have been trying to find/kill the killer. Today it's "If people don't want to die by shark attack, they shouldn't be swimming in the Pacific, they should go to wave-machine parks."
My UC AB and MD diplomas were "signed" by Jerry Brown. If I lived in Cal today, Id vote for Meg Whtman and Carly Fiorina. The fact that neither is going to win tells you how trashed the state has become.

California is an example of a state that is completely run by Democrats. No Republican counter balance whatsoever. Even the Republican governor is a Democrat. It's a wonderful experiment.

Botto,
It's okay, you haven't been out there. Your kind of a weenie, huh? I could take you into GWS and TS territory, but you'd be too scared to try it. "I can't do this because I'm too scared."

I saved a couple over their heads swimmers in La Jolla. "Okay, here comes a wave, take a deep breath and hold it." It was a total blast.
I went body surfiing with fur seals in New Zealand. Then I heard, "That's white pointer territory." Which the meant was Great White patrol zone. Then bodyboarded at the mouth of Waimea Canyon in Kauai, I had great waves to myself. When I mentiioned it locals said, "That's tiger shark city." Ohh, that's why I was the only guy out there in 4-5 foot clean waves, barreling. Not too many people have experenced the SOUND of being inside the barrel, but it is wonderful. It's like riding full-out on twisties.

I have no idea what direction this thread is heading but it doesn't seem to involve cycling.
