Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seven, IF, Moots, Erickson, Dean, Lynskey are the first ones I would look at.

Like 85% of queries on this forum, the correct answer is "it depends."

In this case it depends on your budget, your need for custom vs stock, your planned use for the bike, your geographic location, etc.

If you are on a major budget consider Habanero. That's what I did as I needed custom geometry on a budget.

I am sure Serotta's Ti offerings are fine.

But they don't have quite the reputation as Moots or Lynskey, for whatever reason.

You could say the same thing for a Tom Kellogg Spectrum....

AFAIK, Serotta doesn't do true Ti (they all have carbon bits) any longer except for the "Classique Ti", which is $3400 w/o any options and for that price, I don't want a sloping top tube

Also, this does nothing for me:

"The Classique TI is like a phenomenal bottle of surprisingly affordable wine. At a glance it may look like other titanium bikes but beneath the surface is the spirit of Serotta. It’s simple, yet mysteriously complex, bringing out the best subtlties that the US sourced, Serotta engineered titanium has to offer."

neither does this:

"It lasts forever."

Too much fluff. A good bike should sell itself.

Here's a question:

If you were going to buy a custom built MOOTS titanium road frame, why wouldn't you just go straight to the founder and pioneer of MOOTS -- Kent Eriksen?

I don't get the logic. I mean, I like MOOTS stuff (I have a stem and seatpost), but I like Kent more. He's an awesome person, and the door to his shop is always open. He let me ream my own headtube, and even convinced the guys over at Orange Peel to let me wrench on some bikes in their shop.

Plus, you can't argue with the "A gram is a gram" motto:

Good question. I would go with KE just because I like dealing with the head honcho directly; plus, he is the godfather.

But then again, I went with Steve Hampsten and maestro welder Max (3 years @ Merlin, 8 years welding @ Seven, etc.).

This has nothing to do with logic, I mean look at the quote I posted from Serotta--their Classique is like a "phenomenal bottle of surprisingly affordable wine...simple, yet mysteriously complex". Plus, "it lasts forever" .

But they're no Ibis Ti Road. I can't kill that bike. I've had it since my kid was 2. She's going to college next Fall.

Rode it 95 miles yesterday and today.

He does some very nice work. Heard good things too.

A gram is a gram. That's grandpa himself. Something was going wrong with his number mid race so he reached down to fiddle with it. Something happened and he ended up endo-ing. He rode the next 20miles mostly standing up, and crossed the line with his race number in his mouth.

I do believe I finally found a thread of yours to which nobody ever replied.

https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-279684.html

If I could have Ibis make me a titanium road bike right now, I would.

I'm interested in finding out BD's price on the "Motobecane" Ti with SRAM Apex that was reviewed in the current [I]Bicycling /I] magazine. (Free subscription due to LAB membership.)

Guys, Motobecane and Habanero don't qualify as "very nice" as per the OP's request.

Lynskey, Moots, and Baum are what I'd look at.

I'll probably have a Moots come spring--probably one of the new RSL. Maybe a Compact SL, if one can be found in the right size. I don't care what the welds look like.
