Getting a bike from France

Any thoughts on getting a bike from France, that you have found on Le Bon Coin? Where you could pay (and find) a quality bike shop to properly disassemble and ship, after purchasing the bike. Any recommendations or experiences appreciated.

I'm going through that discovery process now, and I won't know for a few days. As soon as I do, I'll PM you. My guess is I'm going to end up paying $250. $100 for each of 2 boxes, and $50 for a 3rd.

I do know I've bought a frame from Greece, and shipping was $96. I also know I've bought a frame set from Amsterdam, and shipping was about the same.

Per the shipper from Amsterdam, the Euro shipping regs are very restrictive on size, so a complete bike would be, minimum, in two boxes, likely at $100 each.

BikeFlights quoted $650. I shipped an entire bike to Australia for $403 a few years ago. OK, more than a few years ago, as the kid who won their Juniors on the bike is now a Classiques rider. Because shipping was so high, and the same for 10 lbs or 70 lbs, his dad and friends bought about 17 different ebay orders, shipped them to my house, and we sent the 68-lb box with the bike and stuffed all the other orders in with it.

Why not go there pick it up, ride for a couple of weeks, and bring it home?

Have purchased two complete bikes from France in recent years, both on ebay. Shipping was and is usually 185 euro. One bike, from a medium volume ebay seller was well packed. Packing material used included vintage water bottles, jerseys, things I'd have paid for and almost equal to value of bike. The other, from a seller who was breaking up and selling estates, was so badly packed, box so damaged, postal clerk advised me not to accept it at all. But the bike was fine. Better than fine, closest I've come to buying a used ready-to-ride bike. Buying parts from France the packaging is usually plain odd by American standards but the parts get here.

No experience at all with Le Bon Coin. Taking a quick look many of the more interesting bikes are also listed on ebay.
