what characteristics make up a road bike versus a hybrid, exactly? just wondering what everyone here thinks. is this a road bike?

I've seen them on sites described as a road fitness bike. You sit a little more upright, but with skinny tires.

My drop bar conversion looks a lot like a road bike, and now rides like one, but the thing that stands out for me between hybrids and a proper road bike is the clearance from the front wheel to the downtube. Another way of saying less aggressive geometry.

i was just thinking that the only thing that differentiates that bike from a "real" road bike, like the Defy, is the fact that it has flat bars. and i wondered if everyone thought that drop bars are what really defines a road bike.
i think of my rapid as a road bike with ~$250-300 left in my pocket.
i'll have to see if i want for more hand positions than the bar ends give me when i get into more rides of >50 km.

There's not a rigid definition. For example, you'll find touring bikes differentiated from road bikes, but elsewhere find they're a type of road bike, etc.
Saying a road bike is a bike that you ride on the road just makes the term fairly meaningless. I rode my Worksman cruiser on the road, but nobody would class it as a road bike. Ditto with lots of mountain bikes.

yeah...it's a road bike. it wouldn't handle well off-road, but does fine on paved roads.

By this criteria, the bike in question is clearly a road bike. On the other hand, a mountain bike being ridden on the road is not really a road bike, just as a road bike being ridden on trails is not an off-road bike.
It's not complicated.
