Terry Hershey, Addicks and Barker Levels and Gauges

[When someone observes a more precise level, send me a note and I'll update the table.]

Level gauges along Buffalo Bayou and inside Addicks and Barker Reservoirs can be used to estimate whether path and road routes in the area are passable.

USGS levels are available live on https://waterdata.usgs.gov/tx/nwis/uv; searching by “Site Number” usually works best.

Based on observations:

Terry Hershey Low Water Spots on morning of September 23, 2017
  • Trail clear west of Dairy-Ashford
  • Dairy Ashford to Wilcrest: Saw 2” or less at 2 locations: Low spot ½ mile west of Kirkwood and long low stretch east of Kirkwood.
  • Under Wilcrest to BW8 Parking: Saw 3-20” in 5 locations: Under Wilcrest; bottom of steep S-curve; dip about ¼ mile east of Wilcrest; long low section; BW8.
Under Following Discharge Conditions:
Barker Dam: 1240 cfs & 65’ gauge height at Hwy 6
Addicks Dam: 1740 cfs & 67’ gauge height at I-10
Buffalo Bayou at Dairy-Ashford: 3120 cfs & 59.6’
Buffalo Bayou at BW8: 3310 cfs & 51’
Assume trail is clear at BW8 gauge height of 48.5’

Inside Addicks Reservoir: North Eldridge levels are based on several passages during Tax Day flood of 2016 and after Hurricane Harvey September 2017.
