I ride the far-north SART before daybreak all the time. Shout out for not living in the OC, woooooo!
Not to rub it in, but it sounds like us HB folks will have access before 7AM.

Ok I guess I kinda rubbed it in.

Sorry!!

The Adams Avenue bridge is only three miles up from the beach, so if the actually put a barrier across the trail (not just the entrance gates from Adams Ave) then it'll be a PITA for everyone and not worth bicycling on it. And its going to take a lot of costly manpower to open-and-close the gates every day. I'll bet this closure will only last a few months until that stretch of the SART gets cleared out, then it'll get re-opened and the OC Sheriff/local city police will start patrolling it to make sure the homeless don't start camping along it again.

Hold on there. Gov workers start at 7am... on the dot. Punch the clock, get coffee, take a dump, get in truck to open that gate ASAP... by 8am

Do this at selected intervals and monitor the population and movement.
This is the truth and also why many more are now on the SART since many are from downtown LA which did a cleanup pushing them out. I have stopped at the Katella stop many times and talked with some of the campers. Its like any poor area, you will be asked for donations. Many want to make money on the items they still have from evictions. Some with bike parts are just thrift collectors, not thieves, and want to make some survival money selling parts and service to bikers. This is what is looks like, even worse in some sections:

There is also risk of disease transmission and has been outbreaks of different kinds:

“waste, sanitation and disease transmission, availability of services and potable water, mental health concerns and concerns related to violent crimes.”

There's a lot we can't change when it comes to changing the behavior of others but I suppose if we were to be less sympathetic and more empathetic, we'd provide porta potties... which at the least would be a step up from what is available in parts of India where apparently it is a part of their culture to crap outdoors (despite the disastrous consequences this behavior poses for the health of Indian children).

Porta Potties

Originally the County would not allow Porta Potties as they may pollute the area. Think about the brilliance of that statement for a second...

There was just a live segment on the News showing them going in and cleaning up. They had a lot of cleanup personnel and police. They said that everyone there is complying and it should take about 3 days until everything is done. They also mentioned about the new access hours. The reasoning was that this was a flood control issue and the area needs to be maintained.

The soon to be displaced persons pretty much stated in tonights news that they would head upriver towards Anaheim as the shelters weren’t an attractive option to most of them. I grew up in Fountain Valley and rode that riverbed to Huntington Bch frequently. As much as I empathize with the less fortunate, many of them refuse legitimate assistance and its a crying shame what that entire SART has evolved into because of that attitude.

What does a flood control channel have to do with homeless? There seems to be an obvious answer. But is there?

Anyone have a bike stolen along the SART?

A half-loaded gun, a well-built bunker and 1,000 hidden bikes found at Fountain Valley homeless camp ? Orange County Register

That's amazing. Also saw in the OC Register this week where the Orange County is allocating $750,000 for private security to monitor the gates along the SART in the night time hours to make sure there are no tresspassers.

AMAZING! Thanks for posting that. I think that article says it all. No need to read between the lines.

"Puckett wouldn’t speculate how many of the bikes were stolen, citing the ongoing investigation, saying “common sense would dictate that if you have 1,000 bikes in a tunnel… some of them were stolen.”

It seems the neighbors in the adjoining condos kept complaining but no one listened. I don't remember any of the good citizens living in these encampments reporting any of these crimes happening around them (tongue in cheek).

Maybe most of those bikes are for parts and the good one's are already out.

WTF
1,000 bikes found, and some of them were stolen. Tell you what.....ALL OF THEM WERE STOLEN.
And I'd like to know what a half-loaded gun is. OC Register does it again.
Imagine getting stopped by a cop for a check.."Do you have any loaded weapons....No sir... they are half-loaded"
"Sir, I think you are intoxicated....no sir, I am only half-intoxicated." WTF
Wait until they get over to the big A ... they might find another bunker.....sounds like a good place to shoot up some smack.

Re 1,000 bikes, yeah, you think? The ability of the powers-that-be to practice willful ignorance is amazing.

The half-loaded gun had three empty shells in it, in addition to a few live ones. So it had been fired.

Too bad they're not cleaning up around the big A. I would say "yet" except that I'm not particularly confident that they will.

Next step; circulate a petition to get the city to waste more tax money helping the homeless. Make sure to get addresses. Box up homeless people and drop them off at those addresses.

I hate to break it to the OC Register.... but in California there is no such thing as a 'half load' firearm.
One round in magazine is a loaded weapon.

Even better, one round next to an otherwise unloaded gun that is not in a locked container is considered... loaded.

Posting guards at the gates will keep law abiding citizens out of the trail but what are they going to do about all the non-law-abiding citizens already on the trail?
