Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes and I would add: struggling up a steep incline, 3/4 of the way to the top of a mountain, silent, the sun beating down on your back and you look off the side of the mountain and see miles and miles of beautiful nature, the only sound is your breathing. I love that.

There's nothing like when it happens. Just that wonderful sound of the tires on the road. Perfect blend of man and machine.

I had about 15 min of it yesterday, interrupted by a stupid kid in a big black Cadillac SUV blowing his horn and giving me the finger. If he only knew what he was missing.

I had a piece of that heaven yesterday for 48 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. You might get 8 vehicles pass you each hour, which isn't bad. I stopped at several overlooks and soaked in the fresh air at 2400 ft elev. Nothing but mountains and valleys in the distance. You stop, and hear absolutely nothing. Truly unbelievable. I love Virginia.

Had a little of that yesterday morning. Steep incline, minimal traffic. I was so zoned into the sound of my own breath and staring so intently at the spot ten feet in front of me (so as not to see how much further I had to climb!) that I was almost startled off of my bike at the honking by the idiot in the car coming downhill as the two deer crossed his path.

Yesterday was my first "unsupported" century. Just me, my friend, our bikes and pockets full of fuel...and two lovely wives willing to meet us around mile 70 with lunch!

So I've now met my New Year's resolution of completing four centuries in the year I turn 40.

That's one reason I love weekend morning rides - there's often nearly zero traffic, the winds haven't started yet, and sometimes there's just a little fog that dampens sounds. All I can hear are the tires and my own breathing. It feels like I have the road, maybe even the world, all to myself.

There's no better "mid-life crisis" than that of a cyclist. Everyone else goes out and buys a car, a boat, gambles, divorces to date younger people...but the cyclist just jumps on a bike and rides 100 miles.

I'm trying to use that reasoning to justify a new bike to my wife...it's much cheaper than a sports car!

Allow me to rephrase...

But the cyclist just jumps on a bike and rides 100 miles. Or he searches out and buys another frame and starts YET ANOTHER bike build when he has neither the need nor the space to accomodate it.

I want that problem.

I second what someone else said... Where are these smooth roads? Texas has an affair with Chip-Seal, or cars -- lots of cars. Take your pick.
