Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? how do you like your wheelies?

bo!

how do you like your wheelies? no hipsto

me depends..
raw down in the track drops 's easy to twirk and turn, riding high with wheel spinning head level... it's so tight action packed
can't help but pop on the risers tho, sittin' up high yagrandmama status, chopper style arms extended, 's so 9th grade mtb phat

so long as my head remains intact it's a good wheelie...seriously though I'll never look at wheelies the same again since I got a chance to spend some time with a trials rider.

Hope this is not too off topic but my friend and I have a debate. Wheelies and trackstands are easier with a smaller/shorter chainring, 45 (45x17 to be exact) with GR9 and sngle straps?
or
should it be just as easy on my 49x17/18 with clipless.

I say 45x17 with straps but he claims that chainring size does not make a difference and my clipless is what is holding me back.

Please discuss.

Lower gearing (smaller chainring) definitely makes it easier. I like mine with risers... doing a wheelie in the drops doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room. That said, my favorite roadie wheelie-rider is definitely Robbie, McEwan. He hasn't had a doping scandal, and he was a BMX champ too:

Thank you all for the gearing info. I guess that helps my decision. My friend had suggested to me that I needed to buy pedals, cages and straps to help in the trackstand/wheelie area. I guess I can keep my clipless and purchase a 45t chainring instead. Anybody have a 45t 1/8 chainring???

you need to ride more. building up your muscle memory of trackstanding. also the muscles that you use to push back on the pedals will get stronger. unless you ride bmx/mountain bike already, thats the main problem for people trying to learn trackstands.

clips and straps make it easy for bails.

also for wheelies your posture helps a lot too. how upright you are in your riding position. right now im so upright that wheelie are all in my legs for the pop-up and hold. when i had a non-rising stem for m bullhorn/drops set-up i needed alittle pull-up help from my hands.

I don't ride many wheelies. Too many gear inches (for me) to do it easily.

fetch,
yeah, I remember when I was a die hard MTBer in the day. Trackstanding on the mtb was second nature when coming up to a tricky section on the trail or at a intersection when on the road. Yeah, i gotta ride more but can somebody put more hours in the day first

Is there someone out there who seriusly thinks clips&straps are faster to get out of than clipless?
Even if you don't cinch the strap down, clipless wins hands down. Maybe not road systems but SPD and 'beaters let you bail out before you know it.

(Once I tried to make a sharp turn at 10mph and the front wheel suddenly wiped out on a wet patch... I stomped my left foot and stayed upright to my own surprize. With clips and straps instead of the SPD that wd have been a certain crash.)

Did a similar thing on a hard high speed turn with clips and straps (and at a much higher speed, didn't unclip, and just powered through the skid... I actually thought I was toast.

I save the wheelies for my mountain bike.

um, you clearly misunderstood a bruva (yes, "bruva". im trying to be black AND from england. never mind) what i said was- your ability to trackstand (or not) has nothing to do with gear ratio, but rather balance, and as our good friend fetch pointed out- muscle memory). furthermore, clips and straps arent even a part of the debate, as you wont want to be strapped in whilst LEARNING to trackstand. as for wheelies, im not sure you should even be attempting those clipped in this early in the game, period. but thats just me. finally, to echo another of fetches sentiments- RIDE MORE

p.s. before or after the weds ride, we'll swap our pedals out and this debate will be over!

Yeah... but if I was practicing trackstanding I would rather have toe straps and sneakers so when I do bail and put my foot down, I don't have to worry about balancing on a cleat and rolling my ankle.

I've been able to ride a unicycle since I was 12 yet I still can't ride a decent wheelie.

Most folks I know use MTB pedals... balancing on a MTB cleat is a non-issue.
