Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

90mm hub with 100mm fork

hi,

i have a front wheel with a 90mm hub (came off of a custom TT bike from the 80s). I'd like to use it on a bike with a fork that is made for a 100mm hub. does anyone see any potential problems with adding a 5mm spacer on each end? could this cause the load to be applied to the axle and bearings incorrectly? etc.

thanks in advance

I don't particularly think you would have any real issues with it. I'm assuming that you are going to be installing a longer axle to make up the difference, yes? I wouldn't use it for loaded touring or anything, but general riding shouldn't really hurt anything.

hmmm... that doesn't sound all that reassuring. if there are any negative effects (i.e. nothing loaded) then a hub swap will be in order

what kind of fork are you using?

my first thought was to just put the wheel in and go... 5mm of space (on each side) on a steel fork would be fine.

do it, people respace (read crank down) old 126 or even 130 road frames to use 120 spaced track hubs all the time.
