Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmets...

Took this pic last week. Apparently Mom and Dad didn't think junior needed one on a scooter.

Why bother with one on a bike?

It's the silly season. Discuss.

It's an ornament. You can't risk effin' it up by wearing it. Now if I could only think of some brilliant comment/correlate to the 7-11's being there. Uhhh, I'm empty...

Scooters are popular on campus here. I heard about a guy taking four drunk freshmen girls home on his scooter. No pics, but it DID happen!

Here's an interesting article on a study that was made in Thailand after helmet had been made manditory
and how overall it had not saved anymore lives then before they wore helmet.

Yet injuries went down and the upward trend of the previous four years was halted, so it certainly correlates to a positive outcome.

I have a picture of a family of five on a scooter that I took while I lived in Taiwan. It's hanging on my parents wall otherwise I would post, but I believe the father had one on in mine.

Just to throw a little stuff into the game. Hard shell helmets became the norm in the mid to late 80's. I had ridden a bike as a child and adolescent since the early 60's. There were no helmets. I began riding seriously beginning in the early 70's. No one wore helmets. I began racing in 1974. Until the late 80's leather strap helmets were all that was required by the ABLA, which later became the USCF, during competition. During this period no one wore a helmet while training, even while riding in large groups. Even after hard shell helmets became mandatory for racing, very few people wore them while training.

Having said this, I cannot recall ANYONE I knew or rode with suffering more than a minor head injury as a result of a crash. I do not recall anyone dying or requiring hospitalization due to a head injury. I am sure that there are sparse instances where helmets have saved someone from an injury, however the paranoia over riding without a helmet is greatly exaggerated. Riding without a helmet will not make you spontaneously combust.

Well even with a helmet if you fall the natural reaction is to cover your head - not that you can really provide lots of protection by yourself.

You see that constantly in Greece. It's very common in most parts of the world that aren't stinkin' rich like Northern Europe and the USA.

Some folks spend time thinking about all the ways they might be injured or killed and ways to minimize their risk, while other folks spend time thinking about what the beautiful people are doing and thinking of ways to ensure they are perceived as a beautiful people. The rest of us just spend time living.
