Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your most anticipated and completely, utterly unnecessary purchase?

So we've all done it to some degree. Tons of cyclists suffer from the terrible affliction of schwagaholism and can't seem to ever stop wanting new bike stuff.

Hi. I'm Pete, and I'm a schwagaholic.

This season my obsessive schwagaholic purchase is going to be a new set of aerobars. But not just any aerobar--oh no. Screw the fact that a cheap pair of Profile bars would give me the exact same fit. That doesn't really matter. Instead, it's going to be the Zipp Vuka Aero:

Will it EVER matter to me that these are 12 seconds faster over a 40K TT than some other bar? Of course not. But they're awesome. And I'm celebrating some major milestones this summer, so I'm rewarding myself.

So let's see 'em. Let's see the photos of the stuff you're buying this summer and hiding the receipt from your spouse. There's strength in numbers. Consider this a Schwagaholics Less-Than-Anonymous meeting.

There's no way I'm leaving an electronic trail of my "alleged" theoretical clandestine aquisitions. That is if I were going to do such a thing.

My most recent utterly unecessary purchase was a carbon fiber timing belt for the tandem. $520, but heck it saves 10 ounces of weight, is very quiet, clean (never needs oil) and allegedly the bike accelerates better than with a chain.

have you messed with timing on your pedals? would a 90* (degree) offset of the pedals be more efficient, or not?

I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking about buying my first carbon bike. I got a small, unexpected glob of money, and I've never had a cf bike, and I figure it will make me lots faster, sooo....
My LBS guy knows where there are some NOS Look 585 frames in 2XL and he can get me one on the cheap.

Them there's fightin words. In Tandem circles, debates about riding "out of phase" can become quite heated. People that like to ride OOP like the smoother power production, and tend to be very devoted to it.

In phase, makes it easier to climb together out of the saddle, and to corner sharply. Given that we occassionally race it, IP works better for us, particularly for a crit.

Hi, I'm valygrl, and I'm a schwagaholic.

Garmin 705. Already had a Garmin 305. Been wanting it since before it was released for sale.

The 705 is a pathway drug. To make it really useful, you need an Ant+ power meter. Its only a matter of time till the Quarq shows up in the UPS truck.

Yeah, I've been eyeballing the 705. First I've heard of an Ant and power meter with it though.

Believe me, I am acutely aware of this. The fact that a) I don't race or really even train seriously and b) I don't need some little screen telling me I'm generating 70 watts is keeping me temporarily in check. I think I'll probably last about a year before I waste the money on that one.

I yearn for those graphs umd keeps posting - god I'm such a data geek. sigh.

I haven't finished my Holdsworth after 2 1/2 years of fiddling with it but recently bought my next project frame off Ebay anyway. I just got back into biking 2 years ago but have already bought 6, refurbed two, and have two MTBs to refurb.

Anticipated because I really want it.

Unnecessary because I already have a bunch.

Life has changed for the ol' Rad.

+1 I can spend almost as much time after the ride looking at the data from my 305 as I spent on the ride....if I had the 705 and a Power Meter....my wife might divorce me

I also don't race and don't plan training but I love data

Like it's going to make me faster. But it matches the bike.

I need new stickers on the wheels. Or no stickers.

Nothing I'm waiting on, but I've had the itch to get a frame and build it up. I'm undecided on whether getting a CAAD or a titanium frame, both used though.
