Not today, but yesterday. Random Fixie Goon called the shop from what sounded like a phone that was taped to the roof of a pickup truck driving on the freeway while he was riding in the back.

Me: "Retrogression."
RFG: "Yeah bro, do you lace?"
Me: "Excuse me?"
RFG: "Lace...like, lace."
Me: "Are you asking me if I build wheels?"
FG: "Um yeah? How much."
Me: "How much for what? A single wheel or wheelset?"
RFG: "I've got a 90."
Me: "A 90?"
RFG: "90 deep bro. How much to lace it?"
Me: "One wheel? That depends on a lot of things. What's the spoke count? What type of spokes do you plan on using?"
RFG: "Black."
Me: "You're just saying words and not telling me anything."
RFG: "So how much?"
Me: "......."
RFG: "Hello?"
Me: "I'm here."
RFG: "So? What's up?"
Me: "Busy today. Thinking about getting some tamales for lunch. What's up with you?"
RFG: "How much? For my rim?"
Me: "We don't buy used parts."
RFG: "To build my wheel."
Me: "There you go! Now we're getting somewhere. Labor for a single wheel build is 50 bucks. As far as spokes go, the price depends on which spokes you want to use. I know you said 'black' but that's really not enough to go on."
RFG: "So?"
Me: "So what?"
RFG: "Can I get it today?"
Me: "Absolutely not."
RFG: (mumbled something unintelligible)
Me: "I don't even know what the specs of your rim are, what hub you're using or which spokes you want to use. I've also got about 10 wheel builds on deck for this week that need to happen before I even touch yours."
RFG: "So when can you do it?"
Me: "Hard to say, but the price just went up 10 bucks."
RFG: "Serious?"
Me: "Very."

Then he hung up on me.

Today I did a memorial ride for a police officer that was killed in the line of duty Tuesday, while investigating a break in. This piece of garbage shot him in the head. He is in custody and should be charged shortly. I didn't know that they did this type of ride. Police Unity Tour | We Ride For Those Who Died

There were about 138 riders or so, some LEO's, some that were affiliated like prison guards, etc. and civilians. Heavy police escort for us, cars leading the way and motorcycles blocking all streets and traffic so we didn't stop. Uniformed police officers riding with us as well. Haven't felt safer on my bike in my life. Ended up just shy of 16.5 miles which was a perfect distance. I rode from my apartment out to the Sheriff's office which was about 13 miles or so. Route kind of sucked because I have grown to despise country roads and three of them were my option. Picked the one that I thought might have the least amount of traffic and I think I did alright. Was the only rider on a fixed gear. Got a few comments that I might not be able to keep up. They chose a 10-12 mile an hour pace. It was agonizing. Riding that slow in a huge group and you get that dang yo yo effect.

Regardless of what anyones personal feelings are for the police, they do honor their own and treat each other like family. Most people don't get to see this side of them and it is a shame because they should. They had a blue Police Unity jersey and everyone signed it for his fiance'. He was 29 years old. I hope that piece of garbage in jail gets what he deserves for taking the life of someone like this.

Cold is relative. What I found enjoyable in my 20's is tough now that I'm in my 50's.

Older guys have to keep the cold wind off our chest and neck as we tend to be more prone to things like bronchitis and pneumonia. Aches and pains come on quickly when the temps dip. Etc.

So yeah, please don't judge a 70 year old guy, or even a 53 year old guy, buy a young guys standards. We wear scarves in June for a reason.

Knowing full well that both of you gentlemen are in the south, you would both be dead if you tried to ride here. Today I was in shorts, and it was 43 with a steady wind, and I was breaking a sweat.

Well, in my case, I was surprised by how much grunting it took to move that dropout a mm or less at a time! I dunno if I should have used a longer board for more leverage or if my frame has especially stiff stays. Or maybe I'm just weak as a kitten.

Hehe. Might not be able to keep pace with them, since you only have one gear. Because the guys with 20, 22, or 27 speeds are much faster, right?

I hope you bit your tongue every time you felt like asking them to speed up so you could get to an efficient cadence.

No, actually I have a friend who does ultra-marathons. He'll go out and run 30, 40, or even 60 miles on trails, just on a whim. NBD.

I'll probably never get to that level, but I hope to be at your level soon, and maybe do a marathon someday. (I ran 14.3 miles yesterday, on a smooth, level, paved path. According to my legs right afterward, it was kind of a BD.)

One of the challenges is that I want to run and ride, and there are only so many hours in a week. With winter weather coming, I'll be doing more running. In the summer, I ride a lot and run occasionally. Good thing the two activities complement each other.

That pace is really slow on a fixed gear as we all know. I am running 84.2" (48x15) so I am pretty comfortable around 19-20mph or so. I didn't say anything to the people, not sure if they were kidding or not.

I have 82 gear inches on one of my bikes. On level terrain, 18 mph is no problem, and I can hold about 20 mph on a good day.

My other bike currently has about 71 inches, and I like to ride it at 15 or 16 mph. I can go for hours at that pace.

Yeah, would have been skiing in shorts when I was in my 20's. Curious how old you are. 43° is balmy for you, no?

My Saturday ride started at 38° and it was very windy. Low temps are not a problem but I wasn't wearing shorts, that's for sure!

For the record, 49 miles with 2560 ft elevation. Now in WBM (winter base miles) mode - speed slow and heart rate low.

Turned 44 in September. Had bibs on, jersey, and a windproof jacket, head cover, wool socks and PI thermal gloves. Temp at start of ride was windy and 34°. I have Reynaud's so I need to keep extremities warm specifically my hands. I knew that I would be outdoors for several hours in those temps so I did make an effort to dress a bit warmer than normal. Local ride would have had me in a jersey and sleeves for those temps.

Only did 44 miles and had just under 1000 ft of elevation (pretty dang flat around here).
