Yours was definitely an inspiration when I was thinking about going to STI. I did my best to balance out the black and silver and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I think the Velo Orange crankset is the key to making the whole thing work.

Gravelking 28mm on there right now but I'm not sure how much life is left in them, so probably in the spring I'll be shopping for new tires. I'm thinking some gumwalls might look really nice on there

Love how this all works together even though nothing seems like it is "at home". Total Franken-bike in the best sense of the term.
But... what is going on with that bottle cage?

Yup, I see that. But what about the black extension? Does Tom have very short arms?

Thanks, @Rocket-Sauce. That's a Minoura mount. It clamps to the down tube with one clamp and provides two threaded holes into which to mount a cage. It is very proud of the down tube.

I think the only original parts on the bike are the headset and the brake calipers. I'm thinking of replacing the calipers, as I find them to be barely adequate.

Something I've been ruminating on over the last few days...

I really hate the stem that is on there right now - I've deliberately been posting this specific picture from this angle because it hides it so well.

As some of you might be familiar with, these Japanese Schwinns have an .833 steer tube diameter so finding a stem that works is a bit tricky. I've got a 90mm Dia-Compe with a 26.0 clamp but I think the reach is just a tiny bit long. Plus the angle of the stem is suited more to a frame with a more relaxed head tube angle. The stem points down, but bars want to be just so slightly up and I find the combination quite jarring when you look at it head on. Plus from a side view the Dia-Compe is quite chunky compared to a Nitto.

I think the best solution would be to swap out the fork so that I can get one with a 22.2mm steer tube. Only problem would be finding a good quality fork with the properly long axle-to-crown, as this bike was designed around 27" wheels.

I need to do some measurements, but if a chrome fork of good quality and reasonable price isn't possible to find...how bad would a black steel fork look on this? Maybe a satin or matte finish?

If money were no object I'd probably just have a custom carbon Wound Up made, but I'm not about to drop $400-$500 on a fork for this old thing. At least not at the moment...

Very nice and understated. Looks like a 54cm frame. I bet the 853 and carbon fork rides very nice.
Which handlebars are you using? I like the compact shape.
That stem adapter though. You can find stepped adapters for cheaps and 1" spacers and it will look miles better.

Could you post some pics of the configuration you prefer, and specify some parts vendors?
Thanks.

Available on eBay galore for a few coins, search term 'quill stem adapter'.
It is a different design which will even allow you to slam your stem or use spacers below the stem.
Obviously, you need to match adapter dimensions to the one currently fitted, as there are variations.

Somehow I dont think the owner of the adapter above will be able to "slam that stem".

The adapters with a square shoulder at the transition seem a better bet for clean lines.

Thanks for the pic.

Thanks for the pic.
I'm just pointing him in the right direction
The small radius would be covered by spacers.
A radius will hold the top spacer centered, if it's a square lip, the spacer stack will move.
Plenty to choose from though, it's up to him.

I replaced the ancient calipers on my Peugeot with long-drop Tektro dual pivots and they were utterly brilliant.

3x8

Singlespeed

In its various iterations. I would love to say that I used it to blast round the gravel lanes here in Frankfurt, but in reality I just cruised to the local Biergartens on it.

If they fit, I might get a pair. I already have a pair on my 1974 Raleigh International, and they leave me wanting nothing, and yeah, they're great. I'll measure the reach on the Super Course. It's longer than on the International.

Hi Robbie.

The mini mudguards are from Poundland in the UK, I modded the rear one to fit on the brake bridge.

As the name of the shop suggests they cost £1 ($1.50-ish)

Unfortunately the shop doesn’t stock them any more.

Many have probably seen this but it is another chance to admire my own bike! 1988 De Rosa Professional. The only original parts may be the head set but I doubt that as it is not Campagnolo! Everything else is. Outfitted with Record variations of 10V.
