OK, I'll give you that. But those things were cr*p to start with. Now they're just old cr*p.

I dunno about resurrecting this one - it was a troll thread that was only really relevant "in the moment".

If it isn't/wasn't obvious, my previous commentary in this thread is 180 degrees out from what I truly believe (yeah, I'm still a sucker for old crap!)

Well yes...A few years ago I woke up one day and suddenly had to have a BMX like I did when I was a teenager. Middle aged guy hyper focused on a "Kids bike". Turns out there was a large group of guys running around and buying them up where I live!. I call them midlife crisis cycles. I can't help but think there are a lot of roadies that feel the same.

This is why the Internet is so dangerous. Nothing you say, no matter your mood, ever completely goes away and you're powerless to stop people from agreeing with or trashing you for things you said ironically.

Hey, in SoCal it was an "arms race".
No parents willing or capable to pay for the sport, I was on my own.
The psychological element was there.
The "way" was perfectly clean machine, fresh White cloth tape every race, Clement setas.

The Dennis Connor approach to racing.

They don't make them like they used to!
It makes me think of a car accident I was in that involved me sitting in the front passenger seat. It was a 1958 Chevrolet with a steel dash, no seat belts and the windshield glass wasn't break away. I kissed the dash on the way to the windshield which opened a nice cut. Sure am glad they don't make them like they used to.

I prefer Older Bikes Any Day

During the past year I have been repairing loads of bikes in my local area.

This has meant everything from small scooters to the latest electric bikes. The comment about bikes being obsolete amazed me. The newer the bike I repaired the bigger the problems. Gear shifters falling to pieces because of the plastic, and the difficulty of getting spares. I was unable to fix a 2 year old MTB wheel because Halfords the UKs largest bike distributor did not carry and would not order the cone dust protectors which had broken and come off. In the end going through my stock of very old wheels, I found a match.

Halfords suggested I buy a new wheel. However, following a complaint to their Head Office the parts mysteriously appeared!!!

I have just been given two Dahon fold up bikes from the 80's. I get loads of bikes given to me because people think they are no use. They all get fixed up and my local charity shop makes a load of money selling the same bikes that people give away. The Dahons had been stored in a garage for 30 years. After a thorough wash, and a bit of WD40 on the hinges they are perfectly sound. Hardly any rust. Even the tyres and tubes look fine.

Give me old bikes any time!!!!

I know that reviving so-called zombie-threads is frowned upon on some forums, but personally, I love it when they are. So no need to apologize to me!

Stopped at a nearby LBS to see if they had any take off parts. Guy asked me the age of my bike. I told him it was a 1987 model. He informed me any bike over five years old is obsolete and not worth repairing... guy was about my age (60+).
I had a similar experience when attempting to get a front derailleur hanger at a bike shop " Front derailleurs are obsolete , and blah , blah blah" . That's why friction shifting has a place in today's bikes.

I follow a YouTuber, whose channel is 'Path Less Pedaled', and the guy is very knowledgeable about bikes, particularly bike packing set ups. He, along with Soma, recently released a friction shifter, yes a friction shifter, it ratchets and can handle up to 12 speeds I think. It had to be made from scratch given the fact it needed to pull more cable. And besides, apparently Shimano and others have destroyed all of the old tooling for similar shifters. Here's his video announcing they are ready.

And here's the product link:

Hah hah ... I was told freewheels and threaded hubs were obsolete in 1999 when conferring with a wheelbuilder. So I had subsequently had 2 sets built 10 years apart and have hubs for more, plus a supply of freewheels. Seems to me what's obsolete is that anything is ever obsolete. Stuff that works, works. There's nothing new under the Sun. So much for upgrade-itis !

To be fair, I spent a bit more for a pair of these (also made by Dia-Compe based on Sun-tour ratchet shifting designs - in this case Command shifters):

Ever fix something the bike shop said wasn't worth fixing, in less than five minutes with no parts?
Did it in the parking lot of a shop I cannot stand just to be a richard.

Many times. Patching tubes and fixing other things too (some took more than five minutes though).

They had to pay for new dies to be made, which are very costly. Plus they aren’t going to sell thousands. People who really want one will pay up. Should last a looooong time!

I can't complain. With lots of work, my calipers and steel rims stop almost as well as that tennis sneaker on a stick I used to push up against a the tire as brake.
