I dunno about resurrecting this one - it was a troll thread that was only really relevant "in the moment".

Well yes...A few years ago I woke up one day and suddenly had to have a BMX like I did when I was a teenager. Middle aged guy hyper focused on a "Kids bike". Turns out there was a large group of guys running around and buying them up where I live!. I call them midlife crisis cycles. I can't help but think there are a lot of roadies that feel the same.

They don't make them like they used to!
It makes me think of a car accident I was in that involved me sitting in the front passenger seat. It was a 1958 Chevrolet with a steel dash, no seat belts and the windshield glass wasn't break away. I kissed the dash on the way to the windshield which opened a nice cut. Sure am glad they don't make them like they used to.

I prefer Older Bikes Any Day
This has meant everything from small scooters to the latest electric bikes. The comment about bikes being obsolete amazed me. The newer the bike I repaired the bigger the problems. Gear shifters falling to pieces because of the plastic, and the difficulty of getting spares. I was unable to fix a 2 year old MTB wheel because Halfords the UKs largest bike distributor did not carry and would not order the cone dust protectors which had broken and come off. In the end going through my stock of very old wheels, I found a match.
Halfords suggested I buy a new wheel. However, following a complaint to their Head Office the parts mysteriously appeared!!!
I have just been given two Dahon fold up bikes from the 80's. I get loads of bikes given to me because people think they are no use. They all get fixed up and my local charity shop makes a load of money selling the same bikes that people give away. The Dahons had been stored in a garage for 30 years. After a thorough wash, and a bit of WD40 on the hinges they are perfectly sound. Hardly any rust. Even the tyres and tubes look fine.
Give me old bikes any time!!!!

Stopped at a nearby LBS to see if they had any take off parts. Guy asked me the age of my bike. I told him it was a 1987 model. He informed me any bike over five years old is obsolete and not worth repairing... guy was about my age (60+).

Hah hah ... I was told freewheels and threaded hubs were obsolete in 1999 when conferring with a wheelbuilder. So I had subsequently had 2 sets built 10 years apart and have hubs for more, plus a supply of freewheels. Seems to me what's obsolete is that anything is ever obsolete. Stuff that works, works. There's nothing new under the Sun. So much for upgrade-itis !

I can't complain. With lots of work, my calipers and steel rims stop almost as well as that tennis sneaker on a stick I used to push up against a the tire as brake.
