I'm looking to purchase some 700C road wheels for my canyon grail XS. I usually do gravel riding and did not want to buy a separate road bike when going on bike rides with friends. Instead wanted some dedicated road wheels and thinner tires for less roll resistance so that I can keep up with other road bikes. My Grail came with 650b wheels and according to the website, XXS and XS grails were designed to run 650b wheels and not 700c. Before I purchase a wheel set and finding out I cannot fit it on my bike, does anyone know if this conversion is possible? Can I get a 700c rim with thinner tires to try to match the circumferential measurement of a 650b wheel with 40mm tires?

Did anyone do this for their own XS grail? Any advice will help! Thank you!

I might be inclined to follow the manufacturer's guidance with that regard.

Keep in mind that 650x40 is already pretty small and the equivalent diameter 700c tire is like 700x22

Yes, a 700 x 28 will fit nicely. It will raise your bottom bracket by about 9 mm which may or may not be of concern to you.

planning on doing the same. how did it work our for you? will a 700x35 fit nicely with enough clearance?

If your bike can only fit 650 x 40 the 700 x35 will probably not fit.

My custom bike was designed for 650 x 42mm, the 700 x 28 mm tires I have fit. My wheels with 700 x 35 do not fit. They rub the fork crown and the stay bridges. Now my bike is not your bike so maybe there is so leeway. I wouldn't hold my breath that it will work.

My fork may be a little different from yours, but I find there is a LOT more clearance on the front than the rear. Sometimes I run 700x54 on the front, even though the rear only takes a small 40mm. Obviously I don't have the XS size.
Just for grins, sometimes I buy a tire to see if it fits in the rear. If not, I just use it in the front. If it does, I'll buy the second one. Always nice to work with an LBS with a good return policy though.

You can use an online calculator to see what diameter is equivalent to your tire. This works fairly well going to a narrower tire - not so much going to a wider tire (because the wide point of the tire sometimes moves to a narrower part of the dropout.

I'm not sure if it will fit or not, but one idea is to take your bike into an LBS and ask them if they have a 700c wheel mounted up with a 28c tire that they could stick into the frame to test the fit.
