Is There any GOOD Place To Store a Bike??

Of course I have a garage that I have to sneak the bike past 2 cars into its little cramped area under a work bench. It's always in the way. Don't want to store it outside. Garage if full as they all are. Kinda giving up and just dealing with the clutter plus bikes but thinking about another bike and have NO idea where I'd put it.

Is there a magic bullet out there other than building a bike storage unit of some kind out of the weather with easy access?

Park the cars on the lawn. Priorities.

I am building a rack in my garage so I can store the bikes hanging vertically from the front wheels. Seems to be the most bike in the least floorspace.

I keep mine in the basement, but it sounds like you don't have a basement. How about a garden shed?

CA? Why is your car in the garage? Really. Snow like here in MA? Nope. My one car garage has a lawn mover, snow blower, 13 bikes, tools, work bench, bike parts etc. Priorities.

My road bike is stored in the dining room. Our other four bikes are hung from the garage ceiling using rubber coated u shaped hooks. Out of the way and easy to take down.

FWP, especially if you have a garage. When I was living with someone we had 5 bikes on the first floor of my small house. They never got in the way.

I use the wall hangers that hang the bike by the front wheel. If you do use them, make sure you stagger them up and down about a foot so you can fit double the bikes in the same amount of room. The limiting factor is the handlebars hitting each other. If you do that, you can fit a hell of a lot of bikes in 10 feet of wall space.

The best way to do it is to screw a 2x6 to the wall into the studs, screw another one a foot below it. Then screw the bike hangers a foot apart from each other (maybe 16 inches...) but stagger the tops and bottoms. If you do that you'll probably fit 6 bikes in 6 feet of space.

I personally think those racks are a waste of space. Much more space saved if you hang the bikes on the wall by the wheels.

Covered area next to the porch (inside the fenced backyard) works for us. At some point we need to play with making access a little easier, but it's a rental, so we can only do so much. My husbands carbon road bike lives inside in a bedroom closet on a hook.

Funny. My first thought was "No way I would leave my CF bike out there overnight."

I kept mine in the TV room for a while but I got to feeling I might be more popular around the house if it joined the rest of the fleet in the garage ....

We park our cars in the driveway and use the garage to house our bikes.

Yeah, neither of us really even considered putting the CF bike out there. But the Yuba does live outside and is substantially more expensive than the CF bike. I think part of what makes something the "good" way to store a particular bike depends on the bike and how it will be used.

For the commuters and the cargo bike, outside and easily accessible is really the only good option for us. If we dragged them into the house it would require putting them up somewhere that the kids can't get to them and get dirty or hurt or mess something up. Then they'd be a pain to get out the next time we wanted to ride somewhere and we'd be more inclined to just take the car. So they live outside where they stay dry but easy to hop on and ride for errands and commutes. There are risks to it, increased risk of being stolen being the largest among them, but they are offset by how many more times we'll use the bikes with them stored this way.

For the specialty bike, storing it inside is no big deal because it's lightweight and being used for a very different purpose. As long as pulling the CF bike out of where it's stored is easier than getting to the gym, it's going to be used for it's intended purpose. So keeping it outside would increase the risk of it being stolen substantially without increasing how much it gets ridden. Not a good storage solution *for that bike*.
