Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The roads around here are alright. Just not the consistent views that you seem to be regularly posting. Easy to get motivated to do a road trip down to CA and hit the roads.

Stanley Park is too dangerous in the summer. WAY too many tourists not watching where they are going. Cars stopping in the middle of the road to take a picture of a seagull. Etc. Plus the road is crap in certain places.

I swear the road was empty all day before this rancher decided to move his herd of sheep to a new pasture in the south island of New Zealand

yah...there are some ungodly roads to roll here in the golden state. mountains. foothills. desert. coastal. as much as i would love to get up to bc to slow down the group ride,
there are still at least a hundred roads here in california i haven't ridden that are calling. if you make it down to socal (la or san diego) for that riding vaca, let me know.

I know this road well. One of my all time favorite rides. A group of old high school friends and I get together every year and do this ride. All we do is eat, drink and pedal all weekend.[/QUOTE]

east camino cielo is the bleep. not exactly the easiest place to get to. my fave road in socal and arguably the best in socal. methinx only gmr/grr has a viable dissenting opinion...

@ooga-booga thanks for the invite! There is plenty of riding in your part of the world that I would indeed enjoy checking out. I know the wife and I are looking at our summer holidays, trying to figure out what to do. We've decided that we are going to do a cycling holiday, where we have a base (probably a B&B) and then do day trips out from there. But where exactly we plan on doing that is still up in the air.

sulphur mountain road near ojai, ca, a challenging and scenic road (did it east to west) that's about half paved, half hard-packed dirt. did it on a road bike running (not-advised) 23's (no flats-?!?!) and i'd do it again probably going the same direction. working the brakes downhill on the scenic dirt part beats the fistful of brakes down a technical, canopied, paved part. https://www.strava.com/activities/1487587694

All of this makes me wish I lived somewhere else, oh, wait, maybe not. I love NYC.

But I do have the benefit of free flights anywhere in the world as the father of a pilot. I just have to retire so I can do this.
